VoIP How To

SNOM 370 Remote Extension. Plug and Play.

April 13, 2009 - 12:51 pm | 3 Comments

I want to start off by giving credit on this nice little piece of engineering to Worksighted systems engineer Matt Scott. I want to start off by defining a remote extension as one that must exit a NAT boundary to traverse the Internet before connecting to the 3CX IP PBX.  This is typically the case when phones are used for remote tele-commuters or in service provider scenarios. Some of you

What is overlap dialing?

April 10, 2009 - 5:57 pm | 0 Comments

Overlap dialing is required by CAS signaled lines. Overlap dial provides for a longer time-out period between digits, also called the inter-digit timer. With overlap dial set to off, the gateway expects to receive the digits one right after the other coming in to this line with very little delay between digits. With overlap dial set to on, then the device waits up to about 2 seconds between digits. Basically

What is QoS (Quality of Service)? A guide

April 3, 2009 - 6:25 pm | 0 Comments

In the VoIP / telecommunications  field, the term QoS (Quality of Service) refers to resource reservation control mechanisms. Quality of service is the ability to provide different priority to different applications, users, or data flows, or to guarantee a certain level of performance to a data flow.  Quality of service guarantees are important for VoIP since VoIP is real time and requires fixed bit rate. QoS mechanisms are not required

Busy Lamp fields? VoIP Article

March 19, 2009 - 8:06 pm | 0 Comments

Busy Lamp fields are the LEDS on phones that indicate the status of other extensions.  BLF fields have been “inherited” from old style PBXs that have this feature. Nowadays, presence information is also displayed via 3CX Assistant, however BLF remains a very popular feature. This article explains more about what BLF is and how it works in SIP context.

How can I view SIP traffic with the Wireshark Network Capture tool?

March 4, 2009 - 5:42 pm | 0 Comments

To troubleshoot or analyze a particular problem, it is often handy to take a closer look at the actual SIP traffic being sent to and from 3CX Phone System or the 3CX VOIP client. For example: You can check whether SIP traffic is arriving at the server, and thus verify that traffic is not blocked by a firewall on the client or by a firewall sitting in between the server

How and when can I switch off STUN Resolution?

March 1, 2009 - 3:48 pm | 0 Comments

How and when can I switch off STUN Resolution STUN resolution is necessary for the PBX to understand what it’s public IP Address is, and what port mappings are in effect for Media (to attempt NAT traversal when port forwarding is not implemented). STUN resolution may be disabled when: No External entities are in use (no bridges, voip providers, extensions) AND/OR Static Port Forwarding is in place for reliable media

What Call Progress Tones should I enter for my country?

March 1, 2009 - 1:42 pm | 0 Comments

Call Progress tones are audible tones used  by the public switched telephone network (PSTN) central office or a private branch exchange (PBX) to signal calling parties the status of phone calls. VoIP Gateways must understand these Call Progress Tones in order to detect a busy tone, dial tone or hangup correctly. Unfortunately these Call Progress Tones can vary per country, and in some cases you need to configure your VoIP

Magically Expanding Call Queues

February 17, 2009 - 11:22 am | 0 Comments

One of my favorite things about 3CX is that it is so easy to get creative about how we leverage the great features the product has to offer. It never ceases to amaze me how I can build some fairly complex call handling logic using just a handful of basic features built on each other in succession. A few simple features, when combined, give us a whole new function we

3CX Phone System Right Choice in Current Economic Climate

January 22, 2009 - 9:54 pm | 0 Comments

In a world filled today with news about recession, banking meltdowns, weak corporate performances,  and bear financial markets, it can sometimes be difficult to see opportunity amongst the sea of negative press.  Quite honestly, I’ve heard so much gloom and doom in the last few months, I’m very tired of hearing it – much less writing about it. Unfortunately, we do not have the luxury of burying our heads in

STUN and VoIP – part 1

January 9, 2009 - 7:55 pm | 2 Comments

STUN stands for Simple Traversal of User Datagram Protocol (UDP) through Network Address Translators (NAT’s). It is used in several different network implementations and scenarios, one of which is VoIP. Because of the way protocols used in a SIP based VoIP call work, making calls between two SIP entities running behind NAT devices such as a router or firewall, users typically encounter problems. Examples are one way audio during a

Connecting your Home Phone to 3CX

December 22, 2008 - 5:29 pm | 23 Comments

As many of you probably do, I use Vonage service at my home over my cable Internet connection.  The other night as I was sitting downstairs trying to convince my 1 month old to go to bed when I began to wonder, “how does Vonage manage to make it so easy to connect my home phone to their service?”.  I was especially curious when I considered that no router changes on

Is Mobile VoIP the Next Frontier for IP PBX’s?

November 20, 2008 - 4:10 pm | 0 Comments

The VoIP industry, like many industries is becoming stratified. There seems to be several emerging markets – such as residential VoIP markets (i.e.: Vonage and Charter), personal VoIP markets (i.e.: Skype and Gizmo), and enterprise VoIP markets, where there’s even more stratification (i.e.: Software-based IP PBX, Hardware-based IP PBX, On-Premise vs. Hosted IP PBX’s, Windows vs. Linux, etc.). One of the more interesting VoIP markets that I am monitoring at

Designing a Quality VoIP Line Solution with 3CX

November 11, 2008 - 4:54 pm | 3 Comments

One of the things I love most about 3CX is the ease with which you can add VoIP lines.  It’s quick and easy to create multiple VoIP lines for different purposes such as, long distance providers for outbound calls or to tie in local numbers from anywhere in the world.  From a customer perspective, the flexibility and cost savings that come with a VoIP line are extremely attractive. There are typically two

VoIP and IP PBX, More Than “Messaging” Being Unified

November 6, 2008 - 3:15 pm | 1 Comments

What does that mean? At first, it might not be clear – but read on ….. Not long ago I remember two industries that seemed closely related, yet probably couldn’t be further apart. I’m talking about the IT and Telecommunications industries. IT and Telco VAR’s (Value Added Resellers) speak a completely different language, and when having them in the same room at the same time you’d swear they weren’t even

Adding Call Record Buttons to an Aastra 5i IP Phone

November 5, 2008 - 1:39 pm | 0 Comments

Two of the great features of the 3CX IP PBX are its ability to perform call recording and its ability to activate/deactivate call recording via the HTTP API. Most users are aware that call recording can be enabled per extension through the 3CX Admin Console. But, many users are not aware that through the use of the HTTP API you can take advantage of one-touch call record buttons on your

3CX and Crisis Management

October 20, 2008 - 1:32 pm | 0 Comments

Crises cannot be avoided. That’s a fact. But there is a key to help any business sail successfully through a crisis: PREPAREDNESS. Unfortunately, crisis preparedness can be costly and complicated. Most businesses have some kind of system to back up their data. But how many have a system in place to backup their traditional proprietary PBX? If at all possible, how much would that cost?! And how many managers have
