How to make a blind and attended transfer with Grandstream

Submitted by on September 1, 2010 – 2:33 pm2 Comments

In this example we will demonstrate how to perform a blind and attended (consultative) transfer using a Grandstream GXP2020. We will assume that an incoming call will be received on the Grandstream phone which is registered to Extension 101.

Note: A Blind Transfer is a transfer to another extension without actually initiating a call to the end destination. The call is blindly transferred to the destination.
By comparison, an attended transfer is a transfer where before actually transferring to the destination, the call is put on hold and another call is initiated to confirm whether the end destination actually wants to take the call or not. These two calls are then merged together.

Blind transfer method

Step 1: An incoming call received from an external line – in this case a DID.

Press the Answer Button to answer the call.

Step 2: Transfer the call

Press the transfer button to start the blind transfer procedure. At this point, the external caller should start hearing music on hold.

Step 3: Dial the destination number for a blind transfer

Dial the number of the destination you want this call to be transferred. We will transfer the call to extension 106.

Dial 106 followed by Send to complete the blind transfer.

Step 4: Transferring

The Grandstream will transfer the external call to extension 106.

Step 6: Transfer successful

The call is successfully transferred and the caller is now connected to extension 106.

Attended transfer method

Step 1: An incoming call received from an external line – in this case a DID.

Press the Answer Button to answer the call.

Step 2: Put the current call on hold

Press the hold button to put the caller on hold. The caller will now be hearing music on hold.

Step 3: Start a new call

Press the LINE 2 button to initiate a new call.

Step 4: Enter destination number

Dial the extension number of the user you want to transfer the call to. In this example the extension number is 118. Now press Send.

Step 5: Line 2 calling destination

The Grandstream will initiate a second call from Line 2 to extension 118. Extension 118 is currently ringing.

Step 6: Destination answers

Extension 118 is now connected with Line 2 of the Granstream. The initial caller is still on hold. We will assume that the user at extension 118 has agreed to take the call.

Step 7: Transfer the call

Press the Transfer button followed by the Line that is currently on hold which is Line 1. The Grandstream will merge this call (Line 1) with Line 2. The original caller and the user at extension 118 are now connected.

Congratulations: You now know how to perform an attended (consultative) transfer and a blind transfer with a Grandstream Phone.

The same method works for Grandstream GXP2010.

The only downside is that on a blind transfer the person who you are transfering to sees your number as Caller ID instead of the number that is being forwarded.
This can lead to potential crazy situations as you don’t expect a client on the other side.
