Non-Profit Organization Thrilled with 3CX Phone System for Windows

Faith Builders sees important scalability and cost-saving benefits from adopting 3CX IP PBX
Insignia2Faith Builders Educational Programs ( is a not-for-profit organization dedicated to training men and women around the world for work in personal ministry, leadership and education. In November 2007 they decided that their PBX, an aging TIE-128 system, was slowly dying, reducing functionality and extensibility. The NPO’s 40 staff found themselves limited by the PBX technology’s constraints, such as lack of voicemail and auto-attendant. As a result, they looked into various alternative solutions and decided that 3CX Phone System for Windows is the best for them.


ryan_zook“Our primary selection criteria were user-friendliness, ability to deploy in phases (dependent on project-fund donations), the complete system cost for up to 100 stations, and capacity for on-staff support to configure the system. 3CX met those criteria very well” said Ryan Zook, Faith Builders’ Network Manager. “For a non-profit organization like ours, the entry price of 3CX Phone System was very attractive, but we recognized that selecting a VoIP solution would require significant upgrades to our network infrastructure. Thus, the cost was only one of several considerations.”

Zook researched the cost of adopting a VoIP phone system, “We priced several systems and the costs fluctuated between $21,500 and $27,500. With 3CX we estimate that even including our significant infrastructure upgrades we will complete the project for under $20,000”. This is a major cost-saving advantage, especially considering that funding is based on donations.

Installing and configuring 3CX IP PBX was fairly easy for Zook and the competent in-house staff at Faith Builders, and the fact that it is Windows-based was critical for their Windows-only structure. “We are using a Dell PowerEdge server running Windows Server 2003 R2 and exploring the possibility of moving to Windows Server 2008 Standard. If 3CX was Linux-based, we would not have in-house support for the system, and it would probably not make our short list of finalists.”

The 3CX Phone System at Faith Builders is the Free edition, which is working with a total of six lines. They have 29 IP phones and one AaSTRA 48oi CT phone. They are planning to increase to around 70 phones and 12 lines within one year to service their 40 employees and over 150 students.

“Scalability was a key factor in selecting 3CX for our phone system. The capacity to add extensions and configure additional settings as demand grew has allowed us to phase the deployment through testing and into production. We are delighted with the ease of deploying additional phones and customizing additional digital receptionist options.” explains Zook.

For Faith Builders’ telephone users the greatest gain from adopting 3CX IP PBX has been the addition of digital receptionists and voicemail, adds Ryan, “The direct access to specific extensions has already translated to significantly lowered front-desk call routing. Voice mail has taken longer with a learning curve for staff, but we are beginning to reap the benefits of staff voice mail.”

Faith Builders will soon be upgrading their 3CX IP PBX from the Free to the Professional edition. Ryan Zook is looking forward to the extra features that they will be enjoying with the Professional edition, such as the 3CX User portal that allows individual users to configure their own options (i.e. call forwarding), dial by name, call parking and pickup, call-queuing, phone provisioning and BLF status.
