FQDN Already in Use. Please Choose Another One
On this topic
Where does this happen?
You may encounter the warning in the powershell styled “PbxConfigTool” or during the web configuration guide.
When does this happen?
At first it is important to understand how the hostname is composed within 3CX and that also owned FQDNs are not exempted from this. Here is the full take on FQDN Management and Allocation.
Commonly this happens in these cases:
- The selected FQDN hostname is very common (e.g. 3CX) and another 3CX user has already reserved this name for their own use.
- You have installed the PBX with a demo “PBX Edition” key and bought a new commercial license key (find out more on Evaluating 3CX and Converting PBX Edition Keys into Commercial Editions).
- You have installed the PBX with key A and now attempt to install key B with the same FQDN. (Find out more on Evaluating 3CX and Converting PBX Edition keys into commercial editions).
How to solve it?
In this case you must pick another name. Extend the hostname with something unique, like your company name (e.g. 3cx -> 3cxcompany). While using your own domain 3CX will use the first 2 dots to concatonate your PBX name (3cx.company.com -> 3cxcompany.3cx.net for the use of webmeeting).
Case B & C
You can use a new FQDN for the new key. If the initial FQDN should be mapped to the new key, the “evaluation” key must be released from the FQDN in order to do so.* Also if a backup is been used to restore the 3CX configuration, this backup must not include the “license key” and/or “FQDN” of the previous installation! This will allow at the restore time to enter a new key and a new FQDN.
* Once the FQDN is not bound from any key, the hostname returns back into the public pool of available FQDNs. In this moment it can be registered by any other user. Therefore it is advisable to do the switching in a timely manner to avoid disappointment!
Every 3CX license key has a corresponding unique user allowing you login to https://erp.3cx.com. This information is emailed to the registered user of the product upon registration or sign up for the PBX Edition.
If you can not remember the password, you can reset it from the same place (https://erp.3cx.com). An email with further instructions is send to the product owner.
Once successfully logged in you will be presented with the status of your license key. You may release the key from here. In case you were not sure what you had selected previously you can see the information in the FQDN tab.
Login to the 3CX ERP System (https://erp.3cx.com) with your partner account details. If you can not remember the password, you can reset it from the same place (https://erp.3cx.com). An email with further instructions is sent to the partner account owner.
Once successfully logged in navigate to Dashboard > NFR Keys.
From here you can review all your keys, where they are bound to and unbind them if needed.
