Supported Operating Systems for 3CX

3CX can be installed on Linux and most versions of Windows. Below is a complete list of supported and not supported operating systems.

Please note that not supported does not necessarily mean that 3CX will not work however it is not tested by our testing team and we will not be able to assist with issues. Some supported Operating Systems might require the use of the inbuilt Web Server in 3CX – NGINX for V15.

      @Cristina, thanks for your question, 3CX Phone System is Windows based. There is a 3CXPhone client for Mac but the PBX itself is for Windows only.

      The only reason I ask is because Microsoft loves, I mean LOVES updates. Mac OS X updates rarely happen. And when they do, the computer is back up in minutes.

      What does this mean? Well it means that our 24 hr operation here is “phoneless” while MS decides to finish installing, and configuring updates a few times a week.
      We were without phones in our Crisis department for 45 mins after business hours. And that isn’t 3CX’s fault by any means. But it would be nice to have the option of using a different OS in times like this.

    • You can configure the Windows update schedule anyway you want. So this is down to configuration of your Windows server.

      You guys should really look at OS X, A lot of businesses in my area are going to apple mainly for the security e.g. less viruses, solid hardware etc. Nothings comes close to 3CX on apple, so you guys could have the market cornered if you did port it. Just my 2 cents on it anyway.

    • Windows is much better suited as a server OS and it is perfectly secure. There are no plans for an OSX version I am afraid.

      @Jon, thanks for the question. 3CX Phone System is currently being tested at the moment under Windows 10. As W10 has just been released we will need some time to put it through its passes. But great question and please check back regularly for any updates.

      @Angelo, thanks for the question, Did you install 3CXPhone on a Windows 10 pc? If so, we are is still testing, but generally 3CXPhone should work just fine.

    I have Windows Server 2012 R2 Foundation. It is not listed as supported for 3cx ver 12.5. I have problems with FXS registration and stability, is this the reason?

    • Hi Robert – No, FXS registration would be down to the device you are using or the configuration. Ensure you are using supported FXS devices. Contact support for more information how to resolve…

      @Julio, thanks for the question. 3CX Phone System v12.5 is not supported on Windows 10. V14 on the other hand has been tested and is fully supported on Windows 10.

    I have Windows Small Business Server 2008
    Microsoft Windows Server
    Version 6.0 Build 6002 Service Pack 2
    What version of 3CX will work best?
    I was told that Version 14 Would be ok on this machine?
    The server has 12 gig ram nothing else running on it.

      @Kelly, Thanks for the question. It it not recommended to install on a Small Business Server directly. If it is for a 3CX Phone System V14 you will require Windows 2008 R2 and above. You can though run the HyperV role on your server and install your 3CX Phone system on a VM hosted on this server.       @Kelly, thanks for the reply, SBS has various roles that are not compatible with 3CX Phone system. One of the main being the DNS role of the domain controller. Dns servers bind to all the ports and also include ports that are required by 3CX for audio which will cause severe audio issues. Others are sharepoint, SQL, exchange which all have an impact on the 3CX in one way or another. 3CX Phone system v14 will not install on a server 2008 it will only work on 2008 R2 and above. Even if your SBS is R2 and you install 3CX on this server it will not be supported. The best way forward, as it sounds as though you have the resources available on this server to do so, is to install the HyperV role and install 3CX on a dedicated VM.

    Kindly provide guideline for resolve the communication issue with windows 10. Win 7 and Win 8.1 works fine in our network and Win 10 has sound issue like Echo no clarity of sound.

      @Rajesh, Thanks for the question. There are no issues on Windows 10, it should work perfectly and is fully supported. This issue must be on your System or configuration. Make sure that you configure using the config file from the welcome email. You can also contact your 3CX reseller/partner or distributor to open a ticket with our support team so that they can look into this for you. If this is not an option for you, please ask this question in our user forums and I am sure that one of out very capable users and partners will be able to assist you further.       i am having thesame issue at work, after installing the client application, the voice is poor, you can hardly make we the person is saying but on thesame system which is running windows 10 pro, skype, voip are working just fine. What could be the case, at one time i though it could be driver issues but skype is working fine.

    My office has recently upgraded to 3cx phone systems. When I install the 3cx windows client on my Windows 10 Pro desktop and install the configuration file sent for my extension by my admin I get an error message saying the 3cx software is not compatible with your phone systems. I have installed the 3cx windows client software on Windows7 and Windows 10 but same error

    • If you have V8 of 3CX, first you need to download V12 and try and restore your backup there. Take a backup of the v12 after updating to service pack 6.2 then take a backup and uninstall.
      Install v12.5 restoring the v12 backup and take a backup from V12.5 and uninstall.
      Install V15 and restore your backup.
      This has to be done because you let 7 years pass without performing an update.

  14. trying to install v15 on Windows 7 Ultimate SP1 (x64) but i keep getting the error cannot instaill on windows 7 but it is Windows 7 Ultimate SP1 (x64) ????

      @Stuwart, check and make sure all windows updates are up to date before attempting the install. If this does not resolve this issue please contact your 3CX reseller/partner or distributor to open a ticket with our support team or you can even purchase a support contract so that you can contact support yourself then we can have look into this for you. You can also post in our user forums, find our forums here: http://www.3cx.com/forums/ as there should not be an issue with installing on windows 7 SP1 64 bit.

    • Normally an OS is officially supported by 3CX 1-2 months after the official release from Microsoft. We make tests on the RTM version but we need to test 3CX on the final version.
      Now Server 2016 was released officially on the 26th sept. That makes it barely 2 weeks ago. So we need some more time before it can be listed on this page.
      If you want to help, try it and if you see anything report it to us. Otherwise wait until it is listed on this page.
