Assistant Instant Message to SMS

Postby davis » Tue Mar 02, 2010 3:29 am

I would love to se an ability to use the message to send a text message and the reply would come back to the messaging person. Some examples if a text message was sent to a DID number it would sent to all Assistant Chat windows in the ring group or however it is configured for incoming calls. If the DID went to one extension only it would go there. It would be neat to have an automated service for SMS messages using the 3CX system. I realize it is a bit far-fetched, but not to distant of a possibility I hope.

I dont personally see the need for this feature but I have seen other solutions do this (At least sending SMS outbound), so I suppose this is a valid request.

I am 100 Percent sure there is no way that a return text is going to work with Assistant Chat, I just dont think that will happen anytime soon for anyone.

Can I ask the application for this? The ability to forward calls to a cell allows you to already reach users through their cells, why need the SMS function?

The application that allows you to send test to phone is called Google Voice. In a way it's a DID, but the PBX would have to support SMS for that feature to work.

SMS-one of the most under used communication technology in Enterprise

Probably because it is NOT a guaranteed delivery mechanism. Countless times myself and other people I know have not received an SMS message. Yes, it is GENERALLY reliable but it is not 100%. Just a month or so ago I received several SMS messages that had been sent to me several months ago. That certainly would not have been good if that message was that a server is down. Is it "good enough" to be useful, sure, I would say it is for the vast majority of people. Would I call it an Enterprise-class communication method, no, I wouldn't.

SMS-one of the most under used communication technology in Enterprise. (my opinion ;-)
Why do teenagers always figure out best communication methods first? sms, facebook, live messenger? ;-)

Mhanson-It might be interesting to you to know that 2 way SMS is very possible. for example if you have att phone send email to yourphonenumberwithareacode@txt.att.net. The phone handset can reply using sms and it will come back to you. Not saying 3cx should implement but not that hard to if person enters email of sms device.

Also, It may not be nesesary to implement because Outlook 2010 does SMS now.

thanks,

Oh I know it is possible via EMAIL, but I was referring to an SMS incoming message to a DID, then hitting 3CX and forwarding into Assistant chat, which was mentioned in the OP. I dont realistically see that happening, nor the use.

I also like Kerry's point (and it is not just because he is sitting 30 feet away from me)

SMS is not 100%. Call Forwarding/Find me is. You aren't going to get a forwarded call 3 hours later than it was placed. So this is essentially adding a less functional feature.

I truly believe that SMS functionality in a phone system is great for a demo (It will get plenty of customers excited) but lacks true functionality 6 months down the line.
