HotDesking Feature

Postby fychan » Fri Oct 09, 2009 12:57 am

Hi Guys,

The HotDesking feature is very very important for most companies nowadays.
When a caller calls your extension, it would ring the Hotdesked phone as well as at any other place where your ext is registered.

It really relieves the inconveniences of going into cumbersome portals and getting administrators to forward your calls to your extension to a physical phone in a hot desked environment.

It would be really good if 3CX could allow us to configure some Extension configuration via phone and not portals.
like as follows:
1) Dial an extension like 5555 to access your ext configuration
2) 3cx Prompts to key in your extension no. and access code.
3) Press 1 to configure Hotdesking
4) Please key in your extension you wish to Hotdesk at.

In addition, the system should have the capability to reset off all Hotdesk configuration to None..... by mid-night everyday.

regards

While I agree that this is a good feature for SOME companies, it is by no means "very very important for most companies". In close to five years of installing systems and being on the product development team for two significant IP PBX platforms, it is actually a pretty rarely requested feature. That being said, I think the way you worded it and how you suggested it be implemented was very reasonable and would make for a nice addition.

At one time one of the 3CX partners was working on a hotdesking XML script for Aastra phones.

Unfortunately the download link no longer works. But if someone here still has a copy it would be nice to take a look at them.

So of the things can be done with SIP forking. Also with the MyPhone user portal its very easy to forward calls to another number. Much easier then using the phone with complicated dial codes.

However, Hot desking is a feature we are working on for future versions

I know other systems on the market allow users to login to phones with their extensions which is ideal for hot desking (not to mention useful for provisioning and moves and changes).

I used to use Cisco Call Manager in a previous company I worked at and it was great. Users would visit our London office from the New York office and come over and login to a phone on a London desk with their NYC extension and hey presto - all calls to their local NY number routed direct to their London desk phone. No admin input required at all.

I know Broadsoft offer this for Polycom phones as well - http://www.broadsoft.com/products/polycom/

If 3CX could offer something similar that would be great - I do appreciate the significant cost difference between 3CX and the 2 other platforms I mentioned though! :)

How about this, an Access database that you can host on any web server, old School ASP on the web server, a program that looks to an INI on the clients computer (Just for the web link to the access database), then in the access database, you can host a User name and password, (or just a user name or even an extension question for the client), and also host the 3CX passwords and other info, then my program will edit the 3CX INIs accordingly.
My program could rename the 3cxphone.exe to 3cxphone2.exe, then my program could become 3cxphone.exe then ask what web address the access database is hosted on, then write that INI...
Then every time the client clicks on the 3CXphone.exe, it will ask for a user name or extension, check the database, change the INIs, then start 3cxphone2.exe and then exit.

Just an idea, it would take me a day to make it portable and easy.. But as you may know, it would only work for the softphone... (I have never even used a hard phone, in my life, and I think they are for old people who can not deal with a phone on the screen   :P )
So, if the 3CX team does not plan on it, I could do it.. Maybe for a joint donation of at least $100...

I could even make the program record the last user name and then ask the user if they are XYZ at extention XYZ when it starts. If they select Yes, it does not change the 3CX INIs, if they say No, it asks for new user name and password.
That way they do not have to keep entering their name over and over.

I was thinking of something along the Systems Extensions already in place:

i.e. Dial *3 - Enter Extension you want to be - Enter corresponding password

I can see that the phones would have to be provisioned to make this work. It would be difficult for 3cx to login to manually configured phones and change a settings, especially considering the number of handsets that can be used with the system.

Changing the handset-model/mac for an extension, reboot phone. Really would be fantastic to have this feature - we use hotdesks alot!

An simple hotdesking option like in the first post suggested would be nice, We are working at an prospect that would really liked it with hard phones but probably is going to use the 3cx soft phone so their travelling users can take their extension with them.

Does anyone know if using the Call Control API is possible to integrate Microsoft Remote Desktop with 3CX or phone login.
The idea is: when someone sits in front of any PC or Thin-client and makes a login to one's Remote Desktop session, the extension automatically appears in the phone near the PC/Thin-client where the user made the login.

This could be interesting in Call Center scenario where there are no mapping between users and desks.
