Record promts from handset

Postby msp » Tue Sep 22, 2009 12:05 pm

We require a feature to allow prompt recordings from the handset. To overcome the issue of very bad sound quality when using your recording method in the 3CX manual for prompts.

You can create a voicemail to yourself or to another extension and then pull it from the voicemail directory for that extension off the server.

While that is a workaround, it is a very very poor workaround and is pretty cheesy in my opinion. A GOOD solution is that anywhere that you can add a prompt, there is an option to Record. If you select record, the system asks you what extension to record from, then calls you at that extension and walks you through the recording process. Every time I have explained to people about sending yourself a voicemail to get the recorded prompt, the reaction has been "Your kidding right?". This isn't one of those feature change requests that will sell more systems or is preventing sales, but it is certainly one that goes a long way to making the system feel more professional.

Agreed. That would be a really nice feature.

Yes - this is an issue I have had complaints from customers about - especialy for Digital Receptionist where the prompt is likely to be changed frequently. The ability to easily re-record prompts would be good.

This is a great idea. Another ip pbx software (trixbox) works like this, but should be the user who make a call to a system extension to record the prompt.

trixbox CE has the user call *90 to record system prompts as you are going through the screens to create the recordings
trixbox Pro has a box to enter the extension you are at, the system then calls you at that extension and walks you through the recording process.

trixbox Pro is a good product and they still sell a ton of systems. However, for the average IT guy who is looking for a Windows-based product it might not be the best fit, especially with 3CX v8 now. One of the key benefits of trixbox Pro is the hybrid hosted architecture which only protects your configurations in the case of a failure (there is no system included at all to backup voicemails or recorded prompts). With Windows, you have a plethora of remote tools with LogMein.com being my favorite and Hamachi being another one. With a very simple-to-automate complete backup available (http://www.voipstore.com/automatically- ... cx-system/), its getting easier to sell 3CX these days.

Please add my vote for this feature. It could(even should?) be limited to the operator extension or an admin extension.

Why should it be limited to any extension since only an admin can be in the interface? It could be that the quietest office in the company is not the admin's desk. Since only an admin can do management than the admin can choose what extension call to record the prompts.

It needs to be limited in some way. Not just "secret extension 555 changes prompts". If there is a way to have to enable the prompts via the admin console that is fine. I hadn't read your suggestion of having the admin interface initiate the prompt recording. That'd certainly work. I just meant it had to be limited in some way.
