use 3cx with fax or service
by mylove4life » Thu Oct 13, 2011 5:01 pm
Hi all, would you use 3CX with a number for fax or just use a fax service and do it that way? I need to allow fax's to come in to opt out of a fax broadcast system, so they have to be 100% reliable for incoming...

Besides the fact that faxing in and of itself is not 100% reliable no matter how you do it, using 3CX for fax will ONLY work with inbound t.38 fax. If you want something much more reliable, you should look into building a fax server with Brooktrout cards which is probably the most reliable method you can possible available.

I new you where going to say that, I think it might be cheaper in the long run to sub this out to a broadcast service.

Cisco / Linksys SPA-3102 is working fine with T.38 fax service.
You may receive faxes with built-in fax server (only T.38) and send with traditional fax machine connected to SPA-3102. Other VoIP adapters also should do the job. There is a post how to configure SPA-3102 for T.38 faxes.

If your provider is not supporting T.38 fax (this means G.711a/µ codec or also referred as T.30) you can't use built-in fax server, but still may receive/send faxes via traditional fax machine connected to SPA-3102. The reliability is not so high as with T.38.

Earlier (until version 8 ) the 3CX server was able to send / receive faxes using MS Fax service.

I completely disagree with the above post. It is clearly self-promoting another product that they sell.

Inbound faxing will work only via T38 either using a VoIP provider (FoIP) or if you have a on-network FXO adapter such as the Patton/"Unsupported IP Phone" (the linksys spa3102 works well too).

For outbound faxing all you need if you would like to use a traditional fax machine simply use an FXS adapter such as a PAP2T, "Unsupported IP Phone" GXW4004. If you need outbound faxing directly using your desktops, deploy Microsoft faxing and invest $15 on a pci moded to put in the server. Works perfectly and will save you a ton of money.

I was never able to get the "Unsupported IP Phone" 4004 to work with outbound faxing via Nexvortex. I paid for a support contract to 3CX in hopes that it would happen but they werent able to make it happen, was an expensive venture with the hardware and support costs so I gave up on outbound voip faxing.

I was told it didnt work because the way the public ip was being sent from Nexvortex (or something like that)

So how would you use a pci modem on the server to use windows faxing? I thought you still needed a phone line to dial out?

My opinion is, that if you can make and receive VoIP phone calls by Nexvortex, it also must be possible to send faxes by this provider.
Have you you’re fax machine prepared? Switch ECM off and lower the transmitting speed to 9600Bd?

Plug the modem in a FXS adapter (PAP2T not the best but the GXW4004 worked very well for us).

On the NexVortex subject, please check your firewall, they indeed handle it with a particular border gateway manner.

Still, T38 outbound is best but 711 works most of the time too.

here is the final response I was given to by 3CX Support. They did remote control of my server and put some time into it but nothing worked.

As per the notes of the config guide, it is not possible to use the 4004 with a provider. This issue will appear with other FXS devices. It is the provider that will need to use the PUBLIC IP in Contact instead of the private in SDP.

Guess I will try and hook up the 4004 to the modem in the server when I have a second.
Do you just configure one of the lines on the 4004 as an extension?

Hi all,

Under 3CX and Masquevoz as a VoIP provider we can send and receive faxes, via mail or on a machine connected to a gateway.

We test with SPA 3102 without problems.

Regards.

I have a customer with a PRI with DIDs. We route one DID through 3CX to a "Unsupported IP Phone" HT503. It was a little odd to setup but works with both incoming and outgoing.

I don't know that it's recommended but it works.

Using a VoIP would be very different.

It depends what you want and what you expect. Generally any ATA supporting G.711a/µ will and fax passthrough will be able to receive / send fax, probably with up to 50% success rate, depending on provider, etc.

Speaking about T.38 fax (or FoIP) is different story, again depending on adapter and on provider. For reliable faxing (up to 100% success rate) you must stick to T.38

I am sorry for the delay in getting back to you, I just saw this.

The GXW4004, 4008 and 4024 works perfectly wine with most SIP trunk providers (711 or T38). Don't waste your time with NexVortex. Call Gafachi and you are all set, if you want to receive faxes via 3CX, ask for Dave Campbell, TELL HIM that I sent you there and that you need the special 3CX config we developed. Don't forget to edit the 3CX fax config files.
