SIP PROXY

A SIP Proxy is the key element of an IP PBX. It is the component that handles the setup of SIP calls in the network. A SIP Proxy is also known as a SIP Server or a Registrar.

The SIP Proxy network elements are essential for SIP communications to work as a practical service. Even when two SIP endpoints could communicate without any SIP infrastructure, this approach is not practical in a business environment.

SIP Proxy servers have various functions such as helping route requests to the user’s location, authenticate and authorize users for services, implement provider call-routing policies and provide features to users.

An example of a SIP Proxy server is 3CX Phone System - a Windows-based SIP server.
