Configuring GrandStream HandyTone 488 for 3CX Phone System
Follow these steps to set up a GrandStream HandyTone 488 VoIP ATA with 3CX Phone System:
- Connect the device’s LAN port to your computer with a straight network cable.
- The device is preconfigured with IP Address 192.168.2.1. Configure your computer to have static IP Address 192.168.2.10, with subnet mask 255.255.255.0.
- Launch a browser and go to http://192.168.2.1. The default username is “Admin”.
- Select the Basic settings tab.
- If your network has a DHCP Server, then select the radio button labeled “dynamically assigned via DHCP”.
- If your network does NOT have a DHCP Server, then set up static IP Addressing. From this point onwards, we will assume that the IP Address of the 3CX PBX Server on the network is 10.172.0.2, the IP Address of the device will be 10.172.0.224, the IP Address of the default gateway is 10.172.0.253, and the IP Address of the DNS Server for the subnet is 10.172.0.1.
- Scroll to the bottom of the page and click the “Update” button. You will be prompted to reboot the device. Do not reboot just yet. Proceed to next step.
- Select the “Advanced settings” tab.
- Set the field labeled “WAN Side HTTP Access” to “Yes”.
- Scroll to the bottom of the page and click the “Update” button. You will be prompted to reboot the device. Click the “Reboot” button. After the device has finished rebooting, you may consult the DHCP Server’s administrative tools to retrieve the device’s new IP Address.
- Disconnect the device and computer from each other, and reconnect the device (via the WAN port) and the computer to the network.
- Now that you have access to the web configuration you can start configuring it against the 3CX Phone System. Launch a browser and point it to device’s new IP Address.
- Ensure that you have already created the extension in 3CX Phone System. Take note of the Authentication ID field and the Authentication password that you have configured for the extension that you have created in 3CX phone system.
- Go to “FXS PORT” tab.
- Set the “SIP Server” field to the IP Address or FQDN of the server on which 3CX Phone System is installed – in this example 10.172.0.2.
- Set the “Outbound Proxy” field to the same value as in step 13 above.
- The “SIP User ID” field should match the “Extension Number” field of the extension created for this phone in the 3CX Phone System Management Console.
- In the “Authenticate ID” and “Authenticate Password” fields enter the ID and Password that you entered for the extension in the 3CX Phone System Management Console. These fields must match the Authentication ID and Password set for that extension in the 3CX Phone System Management Console.
- The “Name” field is optional. A suitable value would be the name of the user using this phone.
- Set “User ID is phone number” to “Yes”
- Set “Sip Registration” to “Yes”
- Set “Unregister on Reboot” to “Yes”
- Set the “Register Expiration” field to a suitable value. For testing purposes you may want to use 60 seconds, but once configuration is tested a larger value would be more appropriate to limit unnecessary network traffic. A good setting for general use could be 3600 seconds (1 hour).
- Enable “Send DTMF” to “in audio” and “Via RTP (RFC 2833)”. SIP info is not recommended although 3CX Phone System can support it.
- Set “Enable Call Features” to “Yes”. This setting enables features like transfer, on hold etc from the analog phone connected to the FXS port of the device.
- Set the “Preferred Vocoder” to choice 1: PCMU, choice 2: PCMA. The settings for choices 3 to 6 will not come in use since they will not be used by 3CX Phone System.
- Scroll to the bottom of the page and click the “Update” button. You will be prompted to reboot the device. Click the “Reboot” button.
- After the HandyTone has restarted, switch to the 3CX Phone System Management Console, and click on the Phone System -> “Line Status” (the default page). In the section “Extensions”, your new extension connected to the PBX should be listed with a green status light.
- The following steps describe setting up the FXO port of the device. The device can be configured to receive incoming calls and forward them to a line, which is turn is configured in 3CX Phone System to forward to destination of choice (Digital Receptionist, Extension, Voicemail etc). NOTE: This device can be used to make outbound calls by any device on your network. It can be used to make outbound call via the PSTN line connected to its FXO port and even provider backup incase there is power failure by using the analog phone connected to its FXS port. This can be achieved by dialing *00 in front of the dialed number. *00 can be configured to anything else from the device web interface.
- Ensure that you have already created the gateway and line in 3CX Phone System. Take note of the Authentication ID field and the Authentication password that you have entered for the line connected to the ATA device.
- Go to Basic Settings and scroll to the bottom of the page. You will find a setting called “FXO one stage dialing”. You must set this setting to “YES”. NOTE: if this setting is not available in the web configuration of your Handytone HT-488, please upgrade to firmware 1.0.3.86 or higher. The link for the firmware updates is http://www.grandstream.com/firmware.html
- Go to “FXO PORT” tab.
- Set the “SIP Server” field to the IP Address or FQDN of the server on which 3CX Phone System is installed – in this example 10.172.0.2.
- Set the “Outbound Proxy” field to the same value as in step 13 above.
- The “SIP User ID” field should match the “Internal number” field of the line created for this device in the 3CX Phone System Management Console.
- In the “Authenticate ID” and “Authenticate Password” fields enter the ID and Password that you entered for the line in the 3CX Phone System Management Console. These fields must match the Authentication ID and Password set for that line in the 3CX Phone System Management Console.
- The “Name” field is optional.
- Set “Local SIP port” to 5062. This is the default value but make sure that you have not configured the “local SIP port” of the FXS port on the same port or else one of the two will not work. These two must operate on different ports. Please make sure this port reflects the port number setting configured inside 3CX Phone System for this gateway, especially if you haven’t used the template provided inside the Phone System to configure the gateway.
- Enable “Send DTMF” to “in audio” and “Via RTP (RFC 2833)”. SIP info is not recommended although 3CX Phone System can support it.
- After the HandyTone has restarted, switch to the 3CX Phone System Management Console, and click on the Phone System -> “Line Status” (This is the default page). In the section “PSTN Lines”, your new Line connected to the 3CX phone system should be listed with a green status light.
- Go to “BASIC SETTINGS” tab. Scroll to the bottom of the page.
- Set “Number of Rings” to “1”. This setting forwards the PSTN incoming call to VoIP line/extension. This is the minimum value. The device does not allow zero seconds before forwarding to VOIP line so at least one ring to the analog phone is necessary before the call is handed over to the 3CX Phone System to handle forwarding options.
- Set “Forward to VoIP” to the Virtual Extension number of the line you have created for the PSTN line in the 3CX Phone System Management Console. If you configure an extension number in this field then you will have the calls forwarded to that specific extension, bypassing the settings for the line in the management console .
- Scroll to the bottom of the page and click the “Update” button. You will be prompted to reboot the device. Click the “Reboot” button to save the settings.
