Good afternoon!

We are trying to set up 3CX so out copy/fax machine can send faxes.. It was configured once before, but did not carry over when we made the switch to cloud based 3CX, and can't seem to get it right...

The ATA we are using is a Cisco 186. We haven't been able to find any guides on this, so any help would be awesome, as at this point we don't know where to start!

Hi Erik,

3CX's FAX server only works in a locally routed subnet and not to a cloud system so this will not work - you should see a warning in the logs when you try and set this up.

See this guide for a Welltech FAX ATA device: https://www.3cx.com/voip-gateways/

"the device must be local to 3CX, in the same subnet and/or locally routed subnet (including site to site VPN)" so no STUN/Direct SIP or SBC - if this is what you are trying.

Oh...well thats a problem! Dang...

You can create a VPN to the cloud without issue.

Unless FAX is crucial to the business anyway I would opt to go with an online service anyway.

We just use another connection direct to our ATA's from our provider and not through 3CX. It has worked very well so far and there is no additional cost from the provider. Connections are free, we just pay for the DID and the minutes used.

Just ensure that the provider supports T.38 FAX (preferred).

If not you would have to use G711 pass through which can be a bit bandwidth hungry.
