I have followed the guid to provision a Snom PA 1.

I have not been able to register the device as an extension.

The only tricks I seen are disabling security ->transport and ciphers.

And replacing the https provisioning URL with a HTTP.

Is there a better write up that goes beyond plugging in the URL in the update field of the snom ui?

So generally when asking for help, especially for provisioning, it's a good idea to post some details about your setup. Premise or cloud install, location of the device relative to 3CX, etc. Most folks here on the forums aren't mind readers.

Cloud install. Stun server.

Cloud install. Stun server.
Please note that you do not need to disable PCI compliance to get a Snom PA1 to work and an http link will never work when the device is remote as the PBX will reject non secure requests.
Since this is a STUN device you will need to disable option "Disallow use of extension outside the LAN (Remote extensions using Direct SIP or STUN will be blocked)" which can be found under extension settings / Options.
Additional information on provisioning STUN devices can be found here: https://www.3cx.com/3cxacademy/videos/intermediate/configuring-remote-extensions/
