    1. Currently these cause a command line box to pop up and disappear. Suggest stopping this as it doesn't look good to end users.

    2. Currently if the number passed by TEL: contains spaces [like tel:020 8778 7759] (which get URL encoded to %20 - tel:020%208778%207759) then the % gets stripped but the 20 remains (tel:020208778207759) and causes the call to fail.

I know that the spaces are prohibited by the standard, but % encoded characters are explicitly allowed. We have a situation where we cannot prevent the %20 encoding because we don't have control over the source data format coming from a SaaS platform.

Using spaces as visual separators is quite common and recommended under E.123 - these naturally get converted to %20 for TEL: formatting. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/E.123 - the TEL protocol is covered by https://tools.ietf.org/html/rfc3966

3CX phone - doesnt seem to handle spaces in phone numbers

We are finding that 3CX phone cant handle spaces in phone numbers - it replaces spaces with '20'

This may well be a problem with the plugins were using to identify phone numbers on web pages, but would it be possible for 3cx to understand and remove "spaces" from phone numbers?

3CXPhone as far as I know handles spaces. In what scenario do you see '20' and where?

We see this if we use the tel: protocol.
So if we associate (in windows) tel: with 3cx phone and then click on a number (eg 01234 567 890) within a web page, this is what is passed to 3cxphone: tel:012342056720890 - which then doesnt work.

We can send screen shots of this if needs be......

    Yes please too!

We use tel: to give us click to dial from our core business applications and we have to remove spaces so we can use click to dial.

You posted the link for RFC 3966, but in there it explicitly states not to use spaces in the URI as shown in a screenshot from the RFC.

Now if I understand the RFC correctly, it is says that:

    This is correct:
    Code:
    <a href="tel:+14692069035" target="_blank">+1 (469) 206 9035</a>
    This is not correct:
    Code:
    <a href="tel:+1 469 206 9035" target="_blank">+1 (469) 206 9035</a>

Seeing that based on the RFC, having a tel URI with spaces is not valid, after discussing it with out R&D Department this will not be implemented.
