Media Server Causes One-Way Audio

    I've run into a bizarre issue with one of our 3cx servers. The system has been working fine until I was configuring the fax service. We suddenly began getting all external calls with one-way audio. I ran the firewall checks and everything came back as passed. At the end of the firewall check, the media server service failed to start up and suddenly the one-way audio issue was fixed!

    This is 100% reproducible on this system. If I turn on the media server service, we get one-way audio & if I stop it, calls are normal.

    I've tried a full backup & restore to resolve the issue to no avail. I also tried a clean install and just re-configured the whole system but the issue came back.

    Any thoughts?

    Which version of 3CX are you using?

    One way, which direction? Internal callers hear no audio? Does it occur when placing and receiving calls?

    What changes were made at that time?

    What make/model router and/or firewall aye you using.

    When you have this happen, have you checked the 3CX activity log to see if there are any error messages for the call?

    We're on v15. It first happened with the initial release of v15. After a clean re-install of v15 SP3 today, it happened again.

    Incoming callers hear no audio, but internal employees head the caller.


    I was making changes to the e-mail address that faxes should be sent to as well as the SMTP server settings.

    We're using PFSense 2.3 at all of our sites. I've followed the docs from both 3cx as well as PFSense on setting it up correctly and it passes all firewall tests in 3cx.

    I didn't see anything in the logs, but I can re-enable the media server, place a call and the post the logs if that's helpful.

    Didn't see anything glaringly obvious in the logs. You didn't mention if it also happens when placing outbound calls.

    Is this all inbound calls, to all destinations, or just to some extensions/ring groups?

    I can't fathom why changing email settings should affect this. It is also odd that it is outgoing audio that is affected, sounds almost like a Codec issue except that internal extensions can hear the outside party.

    Have you done anything with the router? Re-boot, substitute?

    when you say after a clean re-installation what exactly do you mean by that?
    Do you mean you did not restore from a backup? Please make sure there was not a change in the private IP of the PBX.

    I have experienced the exact same issue. I upgraded our system from V14.0.49169.513 to V15 and immediately noticed that there was no audio in greetings, voicemail, 3cx softphone or IVR and the one way audio for external calls from both software and deskphones (Snom 720 and 760). The deskphones all had firmware upgrades done to their latest version according to 3cx management console. I restored our system from a fresh preupgrade backup zip file of v14 onto the v15 with no issues and set the HTTP ports back to 80 and 443 instead of 5000 and 5001. I did uninstall and reinstall the software and restored a couple times before I decided to restore the entire VM back to the V14 copy of 3cx. I will try it again this weekend and destroy the Fax configuration since we don't use it anymore because it was too inconsistent.
