I am using a SIP Server / VoIP provider (not 3CX Phone system)

    It almost works.

It registers OK with my ISP, iinet (get 'On Hook' in status)

It rings when someone calls, but goes dead when I answer.

When calling I get a dial tone but then goes dead after I press the call button.

Could it be a codec issue? Any help appreciated.

    hei vooose
i don't understand your supposition. you register on your ITS, but you don't can talk with anybody. i think that this is a firewall problem. you have no traffic on a voip protocol UDP

Audio problems usually mean there's some traffic being blocked by the firewall... try to double check its settings to see if all necessary ports are open...

I have asked whether what I want to do is even possible, see question to 3cx support and response below. Please comment

    > If I want to use this application as a VOIP phone for home use and only one
    > user (me on my PC) do I have to install the server?

    and their response:

Thanks for your interest in 3CX.
The current VOIP Client we have do not support any voip providers or
pbx, but only ours, therefore it won't work for you as a standalone phone.

In the near future it will work as a standalone phone.

i think that 3CX can do this. why not?? you have to take a look on Shore tel, Gismo... And not at least at Skype. i think that is very good if they make the 3CX VoIP client also interoperate with another sip providers.
