We are setting up a 2 extension small remote office and we would like to make sure that QOS is properly configured on our routers for communication back to the mother-ship. We have Sonicwall NSA 240 at the head-end where our 3CX box is located. At the remote end we have a Sonicwall TZ105. The two offices are connected through VPN and we are able to make calls, however, sometimes there is too much jitter and we would like to make sure we are doing everything we can to ensure QOS.

We know that QOS over the public net is basically not going to work, but we want to make sure that at each end our routers are properly prioritizing our voice traffic as it is received. In addition, we are utilizing an SHDSL connection with a local CLEC. We know that latency can be a huge issue, but this particular CLEC is outstanding with regard to network latency and reliability. With that said, we have our phones setup to broadcast a DSCP value of 46 and we have the 3CX machine setup the same.

Reading through the Sonicwall manuals is not very helpful in making sure we have proper expedited forwarding of the voice packets.

We are wondering if anyone has had success with setting up QOS on the Sonciwalls through VPN and how they went about doing it.

Thank you in advance.

What is the bandwidth or data rate capability of your connection? What codec?

I have not used the sonic wall in this manner, but you indicate 2 phones which could imply that QOS won't overcome the inherent limitations if the connection is only 192kbs and sharing other office data traffic.

The speed question/answer may help others with more experience on our routers.

The SHDSL we have is a 1MB symmetrical connection which has ample bandwidth for the conversations. Currently we only have one call at a time occurring since the office is only staffed by a single person at any given time.

We are just looking for a way to force the Sonicwalls to prioritize the voice packets and force the other traffic to take a number.

If no one has experience with the Sonicwall are there any recommendations on good routers for VPN connections between offices that offer good QOS?
