Configure Your Fax Machine with 3CX Phone System and Welltech ATA172plus-PoE FXS FW

Configure Welltech ATA172plus-PoE VoIP Gateway with 3CX

Supported Models: Welltech ATA172plus-PoE

FXS gateways connect internal analog devices such as fax machines and phones, and register them as extensions / fax extensions to your 3CX. Those extensions can be addressed as normal phones however their functionality is limited due to the capabilities of the analog technology.

Notes:

  • The device must be local to 3CX, in the same subnet and/or locally routed subnet (including site to site VPN)

Configure Welltech ATA172plus-PoE VoIP Gateway with 3CX

Supported Models: Welltech ATA172plus-PoE

Prepare WellGate FXS Gateway

Step 1: Add and Choose Device

Step 2: FXS Line Setup

Step 3: Map extensions

Step 4: Provision the Gateway

Step 5: Add Fax extension (Optional)

Prepare WellGate FXS Gateway

Make sure that your Welltech device is factory reset. If not, reset the Wellgate ATA172plus-PoE by pressing and holding the Reset button for 5 seconds.

Important: All the configuration and usage are made using the WAN port of the device!

The first step to configuring the Welltech gateway with 3CX is to access your DHCP server and create a reservation for the Welltech gateway. You need to do this reservation using the WAN MAC address of the device. You can find it under the device, with the label “MAC ID”. If reservations can not be made in the DHCP server connect the FXS phone to one of the FXS ports and check the IP address by dialing the dial code “#126#”.

The next step of the preparation is to download and update the firmware for your WellGate ATA 172plus. To update the firmware:

  1. Open your browser and connect to ATA172plus-PoE web interface using the port “9999”. (e.g. http://192.168.9.122:9999)
  2. Log in using default username: root and password: test
  3. Navigate to Management > node, choose the Firmware tab, and using the browse button, choose the firmware you downloaded. Then press Upgrade.

It takes 2 or 3 minutes to complete the firmware upgrade. Don’t turn off the power until the update is complete.

Step 1: Add and Choose Device

Navigate to “FXS/DECT” within the 3CX Management Console and select “Add FXS/DECT”:

  1. Select Brand: Welltech
  2. Select model/device: Welltech ATA172plus-PoE
  3. MAC Address: Enter the Welltech’s WAN MAC Address
  4. Press “OK” to save the device.

Step 2: FXS Line Setup

Now you need to define the device and line specific options:

  1. Tone Set Selection: Define in which country you are using this device. If the country is not listed request from your telco the used tone set of your line.
  2. FAX Transmission Mode: In this section select how the Welltech gateway should handle fax connections. In case your VoIP provider supports T38 or you have a Wellgate FXO or ISDN configured for T38 then set the codec to T38. However, if you are running a VoIP Provider which does not support the T.38 protocol, select “Pass-Through FAX (if t38 is not supported). In T.38 mode the Welltech FXS device will actively switch to the T.38 protocol once the call is established.

Step 3: Map extensions

Follow the above table in order to define which extensions will be using each port on the FXS gateway. In the example above, port 1 on the FXS Gateway will be mapped to extension 101, port 2 will be mapped to extension 102 and so on. Finalize the configuration by saving the config with “OK”.

Note: If you plan on using fax machines on the FXS gateway, please create dedicated fax extensions in the “Fax Extension” menu (Refer to step 5 for information on how to do this).

Step 4: Provision the Gateway

  1. Open your web browser and connect to ATA172plus-PoE web interface using the port 9999 (e.g. http://192.168.9.122:9999)
  2. Log in using default username: root and password: test

  1. Navigate to Management“Auto Provision tab and enter your provisioning server which can be seen in Step 2.
  • Provisioning Type – HTTP
  • HTTP Server – IP address of your 3CX
  • HTTP Port – HTTP port of your 3CX
  • HTTP File Path – provisioning/PROVSUBDIR/
  1. Click on Submit and proceed with Save and Reboot

  1. After reboot the extensions will appear in 3CX’s “Phones” tab. However if you added “Fax Extensions” those will be shown in the “System Extension” tab which is accessible from the “Dashboard”.

Step 5: Add Fax extension (Optional)

In case you are using fax machines connected to your FXS gateway, “Fax Extensions” must be used instead of using a regular extension. You can do so by:

  1. Go to the 3CX Management Console.
  2. Navigate to “FAX Extensions → +Add”.

  1. Define the “Fax Extension”, the “Fax Extension Authentication ID” and the “Fax Extension Authentication Password”.
