Question - Do you have to set up Emergency Numbers on a 3CX system? Or is it really only used when people want notification when someone is calling an emergency number? As SIP trunks allow you to call emergency numbers anyway, I'm struggling to see the point other than notifications?

Hi @Terri Griffiths

In StartUP / SMB you cannot set emergency numbers but as you said you can call them anyway.
For all other versions of 3CX you don't have to but you can set them if you need them. Not only for notifications but because you can also manage them by user or group and strip and prepend digits where necessary.

Thanks Yiannis. Can you give me an example of why I would need to strip a digit or prepend a digit on an emergency number?

Yes, there are some services in US mainly that when a user dials an emergency number you can strip the 3 digits and prepend a number the service gives you and they handle the rest. These services have the ability to dynamically change your location so they can send emergency personnel to your exact location.

OK, Thanks. I'm the UK so looks like its only for Notifications here then. Brill. Thank you.

You are welcome

Is it not true that designating a number as an emergency number also instructs 3CX to ignore any restrictions such as not being able to place calls outside of office hours, and simultaneous call limits, etc.? I think this is a pretty important step when setting up 3CX.

As a point of clarification can Free/SMB still send notifications? That's required in the US...
