One license key to register and manage many companies

With 3CX’s multi-tenant PBX, a single license key covers all your tenants. No more juggling separate licenses. You manage everything centrally, keeping each tenant secure and isolated. This setup saves time and keeps operations simple, letting you focus on service and growing profits, not admin.

As your client base grows, scaling is easy. One license key can scale with you. Set your own pricing, tailor plans to customer needs, and keep control - all on one platform designed to cut down your workload and boost profits. A Multi Company Mode switch in the dashboard lets you change between single and multi-tenant. The system will flag if CRM, MS365, or Teams integrations need to be adjusted before switching.

You’re able to create tenants manually through the 3CX interface or automate the process using the XAPI configuration API. Choose the method that fits your workflow and get tenants up and running quickly, saving time and effort.

Huge savings on multi-tenant

Hosting separate cloud instances for each customer is expensive. With 3CX Multi-Tenant, you can host multiple companies on one instance, cutting hosting and infrastructure costs. Start with a 16SC PRO license and reuse excess capacity across tenants, optimizing resources as your customer base grows.

Your questions answered on 3CX Multi-tenant configuration...

What type of businesses is multi-tenant ideal for?
Multi-tenant capability is ideal for smaller SOHO/SMB style businesses with up to 10 users and basic to moderate communications requirements.
How does 3CX multi-tenant help Partners?
Partners, MSPs, VoIP providers and also companies with multi-company environments - such as virtual office services - can host smaller customers on a single 3CX instance.
Where can 3CX multi-tenant be hosted?
The multi-tenant platform can be an On Premise server, as a Self hosted instance (Amazon, Google, Azure, Digital Ocean etc), or hosted by 3CX.
Is there a department (tenant) phonebook?
This is a work in progress item that is in the pipeline. Expect an announcement in one of our upcoming updates!
What are the hardware requirements of 3CX multi-tenant?
The hardware requirements are identical to a dedicated instance, and will depend on the number of users you will be adding to the system.

Is there a minimum license size needed to qualify?
Yes! To choose the multi-tenant option, you must have a minimum license size of 16SC Basic.
Is 3CX multi-tenant licensing different from other 3CX licenses?
3CX multi-tenant is licensed in the same way as any other 3CX license - with certain minimum requirements. SIM call licenses are spread out over the customers you configure. As you grow your multi-tenant system, you upgrade your license like any other installation. You can’t use your NFR license!
In what name must the multi-tenant license be registered under?
3CX licenses have to be registered in the name of the customer/license owner. In the case of a multi-tenant the partner/MSP is considered the customer. The individual tenant companies are not considered 3CX customers. The multi-tenant license owner assumes all responsibility for customer communication. This will be reflected in the interface.
Is there a limit to the number of tenants?
This depends on the extension digit length. For example a 3 digit PBX will be able to handle less tenants than a 5 digit PBX. This is also dependent on the hardware specification of the 3CX server.

Is it difficult to set up a 3CX multi-tenant?
It’s straightforward to set up a 3CX multi-tenant. There are two ways to proceed. Either manually - where you simply create a department and then assign / create users in this department. Here, it’s also possible to assign the company owner Group ownership rights so the company can do its own system management. Alternatively you can do the set up programmatically using the new 3CX XAPI configuration API.
Can I use 3CX multi-tenant pbx for less than 10 tenants?
If you can only host a few companies, this will pose a support and training burden for both you as a Partner and 3CX. To avoid this - where you have just a few customers needing multi-tenant capability - move them to 3CX SMB FREE or another solution.
Can a tenant have multiple departments?
No. Tenants are limited to one department. Should they require more, and want them to communicate with each other, it is recommended to move them to a dedicated instance.
Can I import users into the multi-tenant?
Users can be imported as the department is provided in the CSV for the import. All you have to do is export your users in the dedicated instance, and import them into the multi- tenant. You can adjust the DEPARTMENT and EXTENSION values before importing.
Can different/duplicate extensions be assigned?
Extension numbers are shared across all instances. Each customer needs a separate extension range; duplicate extensions are not allowed. Also, tenants do not have the capability of dialling other tenants' extension numbers to contact them. This needs to go through the SIP Trunks.
Can I use the config API for existing users from other instances?
The configuration API is for all 3CX systems. This is not just limited to the Multi-tenant! Have the system work for you. You could potentially make money as you sleep, by having a customer set up their instance. Select their package (5, 10, 15 users etc), and their SIP Trunk. Even have the potential customer add their users in the partner's website portal and the API will go and set up the users.
Any plans for a migration tool?
Migration of a small tenant generally isn't too time consuming. You can export the users from the existing system in use and import them into the new instance, after modifying the extension numbers in the CSV.

What SIP Trunks does 3CX multi-tenant support?
3CX multi-tenant supports all trunks including generic trunks. It's possible to take a single SIP trunk and assign DIDs to the various extensions and queues in the tenants. However, only a system owner has this capability. If you wish to allow tenants to configure their own SIP trunks, then these SIP trunks need to be 3CX supported SIP trunks that support the “rinstance” parameter. By default, Group owners do not have the capability to configure their own SIP trunks currently. In the future this will be configurable on a system wide basis. SIP trunks can be linked to specific companies for clean call handling.
Can any SIP Trunk be used on the multi-tenant?
Of course! Depending on the SIP Trunk, you can have a SIP trunk per tenant, or 1 SIP Trunk per multi tenant host and have it shared by all tenants. This is dependent on the providers capability of allowing a connection multiple times from the same IP Address (different tenants in the multi tenant which has only 1 IP address). This is controlled by the rinstance parameter. If a provider can have multiple connections per host this makes it easy for billing customers. In the case of a single SIP Trunk per multi tenant host, this would need the hosting partner to maintain 1 SIP Trunk and bill their customers based on their outgoing calls. Incoming calls can be distributed by assigned DIDs to the customers. Tenants will use their SIP Trunks to call other tenants. As far as the tenant is concerned it is another System.
Can I limit the number of Simultaneous Calls a tenant is using?
No, the Simultaneous calls apply across all the tenants. You will need to size your subscription accordingly to anticipate the usage.
What if the Simultaneous Calls are fully utilized?
You can easily upgrade a license key to increase the Simultaneous Call count. Refresh your license key in the dashboard and your new Simultaneous Call count will apply.
Will each tenant have their own FQDN?
No. That's the beauty of the multi-tenant. As the hosting partner you can have your own FQDN, and this will apply to all the tenants on that machine. If a customer wants to use their own FQDN, they are a good candidate for a 3CX Dedicated instance.

Can a tenant create their own tenant-specific reports?
Yes, call reporting is per tenant.
Can a tenant create their own Holiday scripts?
The tenant will not be able to create their own holiday script, but the system owner can create it for them, and the customer will be able to define their holidays in the "Office Hours" configuration, along with the prompt. A tenant also has the option to use the holiday routing in the Call Handling section (queues Ring Groups, Digital Receptionists, Departments) to define an individual prompt for the holidays, without a script.
Can each customer have their own separate CRM?
No, a separate CRM for each customer is not possible. The CRM feature is available on a dedicated instance only.
If you enable transcription - how would that work?
The transcription service is at the global level but it is granularly configurable down to the user level. The billing has to be done by the multi-tenant owner.
Is there music on hold per tenant?
The incoming queues retain their functionality of having separate music on hold. When a customer calls in to a queue and they're waiting for their call to be answered they will listen to the music on hold selected by the tenant. However, if an agent puts them on hold they will hear the global music on hold.

How does backup work for multi-tenant?
Management of the multi-tenant is centralised for the admin. They can backup all their tenants in one go. It works exactly the same as a normal dedicated install.
