Hi

I have just downloaded Bria iphone edition vrs 1.3.2 and have managed to connect it to my Elastix vrs 2, (Asterisk vrs 1.6.2.13) server.

It has registered ok and is able to dial out through Elastix, but when I try to dial the extension the iPhone is registered to (xt 600), either from an internal extension (xt602) or from outside nothing happens. I can confirm I am able to dial the extension 600 if I use another softphone on a local pc to register to it, so the xtension is working of itself.

I am behind a firewall and forwarding sip and RTP ports. For the record the iPhone registered ok by putting the local ip address as the domain and the public ip address as the proxy.

when trying to dial the iphone that is registered on xt 600 from softphone on a LAN side PC using xt 602 the asterisk error logs show :

[Oct 5 13:04:41] VERBOSE[11581] pbx.c: -- Executing [s@macro-dial:7] Dial("SIP/602-0000001e", "SIP/600,,tr") in new stack

[Oct 5 13:04:41] VERBOSE[11581] netsock.c: == Using SIP RTP CoS mark 5
[Oct 5 13:04:41] WARNING[11581] app_dial.c: Unable to create channel of type 'SIP' (cause 20 - Unknown)
[Oct 5 13:04:41] VERBOSE[11581] app_dial.c: == Everyone is busy/congested at this time (1:0/0/1)

any suggestions appreciated thanks, I realise this may be an asterisk setting issue more than an iphone issue but hoping someone can help.

Go into the Asterisk CLI and run this command "sip show peers". See if your iPhone is register with Asterisk.

kind of. when the phone says 'registered' I get the below (the x's are a public ip address, I guess of my iPhone) maybe Telstra block some ports, I have had some kind of problem of that nature before with other ports. I am in Australia for the record.

600/600 x.x.x.x D N A 56080 UNREACHABLE

If you are using the iPhone data connection (not wifi) to connect to Elastix, try setting Nat to no on the extension. The strange case is even if the server didnt see your iPhone, the call should have went straight to voicemail.

its on 3G not on wifi

I tried without the NAT set on xt 600 but that doesnt seem to make a difference.
asterisk log still shows

600/600 x.x.x.x D A 55804 UNREACHABLE

I have voicemail disabled at the moment on that extension.....

ok...I just enabled voicemail on xt 600 and now it rings through to the iPhone, but when I answer the phone, it says it is still ringing according to xt 602....but that's another problem I will look into seperately. I guess I at least have a connection coming in now from the Elastix server so thank you for that.

how come I have to have voicemail enabled for this to make a connection then?
albeit one that doesnt connect but at least it tries to now.

not sure what is going on actually.
though it worked once, just after setting voicemail on xt 600 for the first time,
since then it hasnt worked again.

still unable to receive incoming calls to bria on the iphone from elastix
and seeing the same error in the logs.

with voicemail set on xt 600 it just goes to voicemail instead of connecting to the iphone
calls going from the iphone the other way work fine

Mark,

Need to go back to basics, removing the Telstra variable.

Can you setup your phone to talk via WIFI, removing the NAT possibilities. and check what is happening. At least if this does not work, then it is a problem with the configuration on the Elastix box which might a totally different thing.

I use the latest BRIA with IPHONE and Elastix, and have relied on it for the last 6 months. I use it with WIFI, and as soon as I am out of WIFI range, it flicks over to 3G.....

The only difference is that I am with Three/Vodafone.......

One of the issues I believe is happening is the Telstra Internet due to the NATing, which even varies between Post Paid and Pre-Paid (I might be wrong here...its been a while).

Regards

Bob

P.S. You know Hemant or Tahir??

Hi Bob,

Thanks for your time on this. It looks like it could be the Telstra side of things.

I set another account on the Bria to use the wifi to connect to Elastix and that worked fine, so I could make calls in both directions on wifi. Thus the Elastix setup must be ok.

And since I can see the 5060 port connection open up and forwarding the NAT port through my Thomson TG782T firewall from the iPhone when Bria is using the 3G to connect, then I have to conclude it is somewhere in the Telstra side of things.

using 3G , 'sip show peers' shows the phone connecting but remains 'unreachable' thus has to be the traffic itself not getting through.

FYI, I have an Oztell trunk up and working fine on the Elastix through the same Thomson gateway across Telstra ISP without a hitch,

I have to also conclude it is my 3G Telstra account on the iPhone account that is the problem then, not my home Telstra ISP connection.

I am at a loss how to troubleshoot it further other than ringing Telstra.

Unfortunately this was going to be the selling point feature for a local taxi firm who need a connection to their cars from Elastix which I planned also to persuade them was the bees knees, but with the risk of various telco's blocking the iPhone communication randomly I guess it wont be a selling point now. damn shame.

And no, I dont know Hemant or Tahir but if they are Aussie Elastix support engineers I could probably do with getting to know them.

Thanks again Bob, you helped me at least locate the problem, I guess I will contact Telstra next and try to see if I can get them to suggest options.

Rgds

just an update on this for any who have the same issue:

I added in a Stun server and found this helped mildly but was working very randomly. the iPhone was able to send and receive a call and then 5 minutes later could only send, no recieve, as if it was unavailable again.

It was suggested somewhere that the version of asterisk/freepbx had issue with Stun servers.

I haphazardly tried an upgrade to asterisk and freepbx (current version details in earlier posts). it was a bit of a bodge actually doing the upgrade and though I eventually got freepbx up to version 2.8 and asterisk to something else other than 1.6, it was in a mess.

having said that I was still able to use the extensions and make calls so I tested the Bria again and lo and behold it now worked fine.

I am in the process of a rebuild now, but I will be using later versions of Asterisk and FreePBX to avoid the stun server issue. Hopefully I wont see this problem again.

Mark,

Thanks for posting your reply, hopefully will help others...

So just confirming, with Telstra you had to use a STUN Server to get round the NAT issue.

Can I just confirm whether you are on prepaid or post paid with telstra???

Hi bob

just got it up and working.

yes I am in Australia on Telstra 3G plan for my iPhone and it is post-paid. My asterisk box is behind a Thomson TG782T firewall on a home grade Telstra account but I dont think that is causing the problem. I can see the traffic forwarding ok.

I needed to setup a stun server for it to work properly.

I also seemed to have to upgrade asterisk and/or freepbx
it is working on FreePBX 2.8.1.4 and Asterisk 1.8.6.0 (from I think it was 2.7 and 1.6)

I am using Bria software on the iPhone version 1.3.2 build 7635
setup using stun.counterpath.com on the phone

in asterisk I did the following:

in sip_general_custom.conf I added

stunaddr=stun.counterpath.com
externrefresh=180

and importantly as it didnt work until I did it
I set the extension I planned to link with the Bria software with
nat=no

after that it worked
'sip show peers'
now shows the connection between my phone and the xt 611 rather than the annoying 'UNREACHABLE' message it was showing.

thanks
Mar

Mark,

Thanks for posting your solution. I am sure it will help others.

Just a small improvement if you wish..

The Items you added to sip_general_custom.conf, can be better done via the SIP Settings of the Unembedded Freepbx (under tools).

You can add the custom fields there.

The benefit is that when you rebuild (corruption, hard disk failure), or you have to restore your Freepbx backup, those fields will be part of the Freepbx backup, and naturally restored when you restore.

The number of times, quick changes to the conf files are forgotten in times of "crisis", including myself on numerous occasions....

Regards

Bob
