Hello,

I am using an iPhone XR on iOS 15.6 with Linphone 4.6.5, connected to an extension hosted in 3CX version 18 Update 4 build 965. I’m using Linphone because it supports h264 video from our door entry phones, and the 3CX app only supports VP8.

When I have the app open on the screen of my iPhone it works perfectly, but when in the background or with the phone locked it does not ring. I have push notifications switched on in the PBX and in the Linphone app.

I've tried contacting Linphone but so far been unsuccessful. If anyone else has tried to get this working, is this a known issue or is there perhaps some known config that might work for this combination?

Similarly if someone can recommend an alternative reliable softphone for iOS that will support h264 video I'll happily move to or buy that. Hopefully one day 3CX will find a way to licence the codec into their app too.

Thank you,

Daniel

Try GSWave but without Push within the apps, it will never ring unless opened. All apps are like this when not using Push, specially on iPhone.

Thank you, ConceptsWeb. Further to this, I have now received a fuller answer from Linphone's user group, which I'll put here as an answer for the community in the future:

If you are connecting with Linphone iOS to your own PBX (and not linphone.org), you need the PBX to issue push notifications. See the following for more information:

https://wiki.linphone.org/xwiki/wiki/public/view/Flexisip/D.%20Specifications/Push%20notifications/

https://wiki.linphone.org/xwiki/wiki/public/view/Lib/Features/Push%20notifications/IOS%20push%20notification%20management/

https://stackoverflow.com/questions/21356290/how-linphone-support-push-notifications-on-android-ios

This also requires your own custom compiled version of the Linphone iOS client that will use your own Apple push notification (APNS) credentials. On Android, you can use the stock Linphone app from Google Play by activating “background mode” (Linphone Settings -> Advanced -> Background mode) - where the app will continue to run in the background, and stay connected with the SIP server. That feature isn’t available on iOS as Apple is more restrictive with apps running in the background.
