Hello,

Nearly a year ago, I set up a test system to test phones. At that time the free version had a different number of calls and it was recommended not to use the same fqdn you'd like to use for production. A few things have changed since then. We started using the system earlier this year and are happy with it. Our license is up for renewal and we'd like to move to full production, change the license and change the fqdn.

If I understand the process correctly I would need to do the following:
1. Backup without license and SSL
2. Restore to a new install. (Is there any way to re-use the existing install?)
3. Apply a new license and FQDN.

Thank you!

Yes I think that would be the best option, I have seen no mention on the forums of these licences being transferable.

Take a backup without FQDN and SSL, but I guess the key question is how crucial is it that your keep the same FQDN?

If you are happy with your installation and FQDN as is and just want to upgrade the key, you can do that. Send your keycode to the reseller of your choice and let them know what 3CX edition and SC you want and they will upgrade your existing key. Then no re-install required.

Hello @ecornwellmls

As mentioned your existing free licence can be upgraded to a different version without the need to re-install the system. So if you are happy with the way your system is set up at the moment you can upgrade your licence and just navigate to Settings / Licence and hit the "Refresh Licence key information" button.

Thank you all for your responses. We're very happy with the way the system is setup and working but when I set it up I used companyname-test as the fqdn so I need to change it to remove the test. We also want to decrease the call paths, we don't need 16.

Are you using debian or windows?
On debian, you can clean your existing installation using
sudo /usr/sbin/3CXWizard --clean
Then proceed to use the web interface to restore your backup.
On windows, its probably easiest to uninstall/reinstall.

So, here are your steps:
1. take full backup without license or FQDN (make sure to download locally)
2. Clean (debian) or uninstall/reinstall (windows)
3. restore the backup via the web interface
4. enter new license key
5. choose new FQDN

That should do it for you.

Awesome, thanks for the information. We're using Debian so it should be a pretty straight forward process. It's a VM too so I'll be able to snapshot the machine as an extra layer of protection.

Thanks for your help!

I have a Temporary 30 day license from 3cx which will expire in a few days. Now I have bought the permanent license (not expiring, on premise). I want to keep as much as possible of the current settings, with a minimum downtime.
The pbx runs on windows server 2012
What is the recommended way to do the license change?

Thanks.

Hello @nobody

The steps are pretty much the same.

  • Create a backup without including licence and FQDN information
  • Un-install the PBX
  • Release the FQDN from the current key (if you want to use the same FQDN)
  • Re-install the system and point it to the backup.
  • When asked specify the new key and your FQDN

Thank you Yannish,
Sounds good up to the point "release the fqdn". From my reseller login it seems I cannot do this. But I don't have a login id for the customer.
I tried to complete the i forgot everything procedure, where I enter your serial number, But a mail did not arrive to reset my password.

Followup: meanwhile I got a username and was able to reset the password.
No further answer needed regarding this topic.
