Hi everyone,

I’m looking for some clarification regarding transitioning an on-prem 3CX system that’s currently licensed under a different partner.

Current setup:

  • 3CX is deployed on-premises
  • It's registered under a different partner
  • The current license is expiring in 10 days

Our plan is as follows:

  1. Ask the current (losing) partner to release the FQDN from their partner portal
  2. Once the FQDN is released, remove the partner from the 3CX Admin Console
  3. Connect the system to our partner portal
  4. Renew the license using our partner account while retaining the same FQDN

Can anyone confirm if this is the correct and supported process?
Is there anything we should be aware of to ensure a smooth transition and avoid downtime?

Appreciate any guidance or feedback.

Thanks in advance!

Not sure on the T&Cs you signed up to with losing provider. Did they sell you a license or are they providing it as a service? Do they own the license or do you?
Do you have access to the license via customer.3cx.com and are you the registered owner of the license?
The only way partners have the key in their portal is by association. They link their partner ID via the 3CX admin console on your license and it shows up.
If you have access to the 3CX Admin Console then unlink the partner ID and move on.
You do not want them to release the FQDN or your 3CX will go down.. releasing the FQDN will allow that FQDN to be assigned to another license. you'll end up losing service if you jump to another license key.

TLDR

If you own the key, remove their partner ID.
If you do not own the key, ask them to "transfer ownership" to your 3CX account then remove their partner ID.
**your account being the one registered to customer as the "owner"

Hi

Please see below:
Did they sell you a license or are they providing it as a service? no they are not selling it, we are taking over the current on prem system . the current system is linked to losing partner and key as well which is expiring soon
Do they own the license or do you? no
Do you have access to the license via customer.3cx.com and are you the registered owner of the license? no

Do they own the license or do you? no
Clear as mud.

System > License who is the license owner?
if customer, click the email address.
then unlink "my partner" and link yourself.

I do not know your level of expertise with 3CX. The fact that you are here communicating in the forums is a good sign that you are taking a proactive approach to managing your phone system. But for most customers the phone system is not their primary responsibility and often times is an afterthought.

For example, when we see people posting that they cannot access the admin console after upgrading to v20, and we learn they they did no specify a system owner, or ensure they have unique email addresses or do not understand that the hardware requirements have changed, etc., for those of us who eat and breath 3CX, we shake our heads and think .... "these people need an experienced 3CX partner".

So my question to you, setting aside pride and hopeful expectations about the level of effort you can devote to staying up on all the changes that take place with 3CX, where do you sit on the scale of skill from beginner to master implementer?

I'm not asking you to evaluate your skills publicly, rather, I'm suggesting you make that assessment and then decide whether you are the best person for the task, or whether a 3CX partner who does 3CX all day, every day, would be a better choice for your organization.

I know customers who have skills that rival my own, and this is all I do every day -- 3CX. At one time I traveled around the USA with 3CX as the basic and advanced certification trainer, and I sat on the 3CX Support queue and handled support requests all day, yet, even with nearly 20 years of experience with 3CX there are customers who know 3CX better than me.

So I'm not suggesting customers cannot do a fabulous job of supporting their 3CX server. But you have to ask yourself whether you have the time, experience, aptitude, and desire to be one of those "fabulous" 3CX customers, or whether a 3CX partner could add some wisdom and experience to help your organization get the most out of their investment in 3CX.

If you were asking for my advice, I would propose that you invest some of your time and effort into finding the "right" 3CX partner who can add value to your organization. The license key costs the same whether you purchase it through a partner, or buy direct from 3CX, so it costs you the same regardless. But the right partner will be able to offer a level of experience that would be very difficult to replicate simply because they are seeing many different approaches for addressing needs, doing lots of upgrades, and may have already fixed the same challenges you are facing many times before. My advice -- do not underestimate the value of a good 3CX partner.
