Connecting a network switch to the PC Port on a Fanvil X3 phone

Has anyone successfully connected a network switch to the PC Port on a Fanvil X3SG phone? I have been able to connect a PC to the port successfully and assumed the same configuration would work for a switch. However, when I connect a switch to the PC Port, there is no connectivity for devices connected to the switch. The port is configured for VLAN 1 with Priority 0. Again, this works fine for a computer but does not for a switch. Before anyone says it, I know this is not an ideal network configuration but it's not my network and I'm just trying to work with what is already in place.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.
 
Vlan 1 is the default on all switches, why are you configuring the port as vlan1 on the phone. Remove the vlan settings to see if it works.

You are better off, adding the switch into the network - connect all devices to this and if required connect one PC to the PC port of the phone.

What type of switch - managed or unmanaged.

I don't think it's possible. I do have a switch connected to a Yealink (for my lab) and it works, but we have no VLANs.

Hi,

Probably not the best idea, the manufacturers usually build that second port as a convenience with the intention of connecting one device there only (ie. a desk with one phone and one PC sharing the same port).

I've seen cases where people daisy chained phones one after the other and registrations kept dropping..

Plus, if the phone gets stuck or reboots, the whole network goes down with it so I'd avoid this at all cost.
 
Thanks, guys. The switches are a mixed bag of nuts that have been installed over a period of years. Some may be manageable but I'm sure some are unmanaged.

However, based on @Fredrick Marcoux's response, I'm thinking if I configure the source port (on the switch providing connectivity to the phone) for a single VLAN instead of Trunk mode, that may do the trick.

I agree and know this isn't good networking but in these cases, the switches are small 4-5 ports and are only providing connectivity to the single user's peripheral devices (printer, etc.). So any issue with the phone that causes a disconnect would only affect that one user.

I'm coming into an existing configuration where there were already IP Phones in place for the old system and, unfortunately, this kind of poor networking was already in place. Definitely not something I would do but, in this case, the correct fix (installation of additional drops) is not a possibility.

Would it be possible to move the uplink on the small switch, and then the fanvil LAN port on the switch too?

This way you get a spare port on the fanvil for a single device and the rest stays the same

I thought about that too but, unfortunately, none of the switches are PoE and the phones did not include an injector. I have already started the discussion related to the possibility of purchasing either similar-sized PoE switches to do exactly what you're suggesting. I'm waiting for approval but figured I would explore other possible solutions while I wait. Especially since the previous IP phones worked in the existing poor configuration.
 
Perhaps something like this, that does POE pass-through, in front of the set...

Thanks, @leejor. I actually thought of that but the preference is to not buy any new hardware. I'm actually going the route of running the main uplink to the switch and then out of the switch to a PoE injector, and then to the phone. It's a cheaper option and requires less re-cabling. Thanks, again for the response and the idea.
