DR Test Advice

Hi

I have recently set up 3cx on a Debian 9 Virtual Machine running on Hyper-V, installed from the 3cx ISO
The vm is backed up using Veeam and the config file is backed up weekly.

I want to test 2 things:

1: Host failure -The 3cx will have to be set up on another Hyper-V host in the same network.
2: Site outage - The 3cx will be set up on either our 2nd site or Azure cloud. Or both

Are there any good articles on this, or can anyone advice on the procedure please?

I would do backups daily and not weekly , and copy them to another location beside the 3CX server or Hyper-V.

Without this backup, when it comes to reinstalling you will not have the latest configuration.

What license do you have , if std or pro then you are going to have issues testing your DR procedures as the license / fqdn will get very confused and you may lose connection to the 3CX server. You can not have two servers running at the same time with the same license key.

Option 1 - if the host has a massive failure , you can always you a PC to install Debian and restore from the backup. Just make sure you have the same internal IP address so that the phones reconnect.

Option 2. This is going to be harder to test, for the reason above.

To clarify I do Veeam backups daily and the config weekly.

I have the Pro Edition, is it worth upgrading to Enterprise then? It is only £100 more now so probably worth it.

first of all, DR is mandating you need to forget provisioning devices on IP, just FQDNs.
The reason is obvious, you move the server --> IP changes --> Problem

Now, on-prem to cloud is harder. Every 3CXPhone APP is always dual provisioned and knows how to talk to and local or remote system. An IP Phone is harder as they need to adapt to change from Local Lan to STUN Mode to work correctly. Now is it acceptable to reprovision all IP phones? If you have 5 ext. yes, if you have 500 and time is an issue, no.

What you can do, and I did this in the past, even in the local LAN I route all phones via a 3CX SBC and I just need to re-route this 3CX SBC channel to my new cloud install...
