a question: upon expiry of the term, does the free license lose the Let’s Crypt Certificate SSL and the FQDN? Thank you

No, the free license auto renewals the maintenance - so fqdn and ssl continues

If my understanding is correct, the older 8SC free license will be downgraded to a 4SC license under the amended free tier. Is that correct?

All new Free STD edition keys will be generated as 4SC licenses.
