GCM on Android Battery Drain

So I have set up the GCM as per instructions, opened up the ports on my outgoing windows firewall, re-provisioned my phone. The 3CX still seems to be slurping up battery life like before on my 5.0 Nexus 5. It pulls enough battery that it is not a usable app and have to force close it and fire it back up when I need to use it to dial out, sort of defeats the purpose. From what I've read when you enable push on it the battery drain is supposed to go down considerably.
