Instant Messaging Media - Where is it stored?

Just wondered where these images get uploaded to in the chats?

Are they stored indefinitely on the PBX or is there some maintenance that runs that removes them?

Should I be worried that my PBX can get full from these files?

my initial guess is that it gets converted to raw data and stored in the database.... but have not done any real investigation on the matter.
As a small test - I did a chat - uploaded a 1mb jpg. did a backup before and after and the backup was 1mb larger. And nothing else is going on. No phone calls or anything.
