Good morning everyone,
today they finally came to configure my line in the office but on the VoIP voice part I ask for help because according to what the company technician I talked to told me they do not officially allow to configure trunks on non-proprietary devices.
The technician told me that he can however configure the proprietary device to handle a dedicated internal trunk between their device and my on premise 3cx (through this trunk would go all the office numbers). He did not know 3cx however told me that with Asterix they generally do this.
Granted that I would have much preferred to register the trunks directly to 3cx could you help me understand what kind of procedure we are talking about, what so I can read some documentation?
Is it possible that it is a Bridge ( https://www.3cx.com/docs/manual/connecting-pbx-bridges/ )?
Thank you

If you want a device to register to 3CX (other than as an extension), then the trunk type would have to be Bridge. However, Bridge trunks are no longer supported when connected to something other than another 3CX PBX.

That doesn't mean that you can't try.

Here is a link to some older information, from back when this sort of thing was supported. It might be of help.

I would recommend using a supported SIP provider.

This approach of requiring on-prem equipment is often championed by carriers with the argument that they will ensure prioritization of voice traffic (something you cannot do over the public internet). However, as the speed of internet connections have increased, in my experience, the need/value of this claim of prioritization is less and less valid. It may indeed be true, but I suspect most voice traffic sooner or later ends up on the same infrastructure as the public internet. If you have access to fast, reliable, internet, I think you can ditch this service and just use the public internet. I have a strong suspicion that your internet connection and this SIP connection very quickly end up on the same cable... maybe right outside your building...

Unfurtunately this is the only solution available in order to have everything on the same bill, a request my boss gave to me.
They put a 2.5gbits for internet and a dedicated 200mbits just for voip....i'm pretty sure the first connection was enough. I'm based in italy, and with big provider this is the only way to have the voice included in the bundle, the only good thing is that we pay 35 bucks a month for the whole package

Being completely blunt, this is a short-sighted restriction and you should push back with your boss. Implementing 3CX with an unsupported SIP provider is asking for trouble. You are already here asking for help. That should be your first clue that you are going down the wrong path -- all because your boss wants your internet and phone expenses to be on the same bill?

I believe most people would agree your phone system is a mission-critical part of your business. Tell your boss that using an unsupported SIP trunk could lead to unexpected issues now or in the future since it is not tested for compatibility with 3CX. A quick search in the 3CX forums will provide plenty of examples of challenges faced by user of unsupported trunks.

I'm not suggesting that using an unsupported SIP provider will not work. Frankly, we have frequently used unsupported trunks for more than a decade. But, 3CX is what we do for a living and I suspect supporting 3CX is not your only job. Stick with a supported carrier and your life will be far less complicated, and your experience with 3CX will be far better.
