IP address setup

Hi, I am new to 3CX and just trialling a setup now with a view to implementing. We will have approx 20 telephones.

Just wondering what the best practice is for setup of the IP address of each telephone on the system.

Is it best to just let the main company server dish out addresses via the Windows 2008 Server DHCP server?

Or is there any benefit in manually inputting IP address and gateway details into each phone?

I am wondering if the main windows server went down (not the 3cx machine, but the company server running DHCP and DNS) then would our telephone system also go down because of DHCP and DNS issues? And would inputting the IP addresses manually into the phones provide any additional resilience against this issue?

If you were not using static IP's on your devices, and you lost your DHCP server, they should continue to operate until they power down and back up, it's at that point they would no longer have an IP.

If you do any changes to devices (logging in to them manually), on your network, it's convenient to know how to get into them (their IP) without trying to track them down each time.

If everything had static IP's, you would really have no need for a DHCP server. If your DNS server goes down then the 3CX server would probably have issues with outbound calls to a VoIP provider, and VoIP sets/ATA's would probably have a time-of-day clock problem after a power loss.

So...as Stepan suggests, static IP's, on local LAN devices, are the way to go.

Static IPs save you a lot of time and headaches when moving locatiosmn, powering cycling equipment etc especially when gateways are involved.
