Hello,
we need to setup SIP trunk with special emergency number (like 911) which is 3-digits. but 3cx does not allow it, stating length cannot be less than 4 characters. Please see screenshot. How can we resolve it? We need to setup such numbers for government organisation who services special emergency hotlines with 3-digit external numbers.

Perhaps * in front would work for you?

* is a wildcard, so *911 would match 1911,2911,3911, etc. But if the number coming in is 3 digit always, that shouldn't matter.

the number is 3 digit. attaching screenshot for reference.
We have several trunks with standard local numbers, but need to add a special-purpose 3-digit number for incoming calls.

Hi,

We have the same issue - is there any solution to this problem to allow 3-digit trunk number?

The number cannot be less than 6 digits as you may have conflict issues with your extension numbers.
Why not using the Emergency numbers in the PBX?

We cannot use the emergency numbers as they do not have the intended effect bypassing hours etc.
The *xxx does not seem to work as the inbound number arrives as 3digit

Thanks

Is it « you » who owns a three-digit (DID) number, or is it the person call you who has a three-digit number ?

Can you please elaborate further on this?
"When dialled, this number will ignore outbound in office or out of office rules"

We own the three-digit DID number

Yes the Emergency number configured in the 3CX will ignore outbound rules and make a priority call.

We cannot have this rules ignored - thats what i mean we cannot use this.

Who will be calling the three-digit number that you own? Will it be dialed by external individuals?

Do your 3CX extensions also have three digits? Is your three-digit number also utilized internally by a ring group, queue, user, or IVR?

as @Guillaume Bourgeois mentioned, using 3 digits can conflict with extension numbers. The limitation warning that you see is hardcoded and cannot be adjusted. Maybe a dummy extension will help you on this.

Yes we do also have 3-digit extensions but nothing uses the number we want to use.

Can we assign dummy extensions to inbound rules like DID's ?

No it is not possible. I don't think there is an option here.

the solution is VERY simple,
Contact your SIP Trunk provider and request a DNIS Override for this DID;

Effectively, to the general public, your number remains three digits, but your provider can change the destination number to a six-digit number (minimum/recommended).

If you’re in North America, it’s regulated that the 700-xxx-xxxx area code is reserved for SIP providers for such scenarios (internal transformation).

Reach out to your SIP provider; they can certainly assist you on this matter.

Yes this is a last resort indeed - we just wanted to have control over it directly.
We will ask them to forward this DID to a physical number which we will control.

This is your best solution,
Be cautious not to request calls forwarding, as they might charge you for two calls for the same call.
Make it clear to your provider that you want a DNIS Override (Dialed Number Identification Service) to replace the destination number. To you, the outcome is the same but it will save you 2 channels usage, if applicable in your case.

We don’t consider this a 3CX limitation, but rather a 3CX security measure to avoid issues. Reliable SIP providers can override the DNIS, allowing you to implement a trustworthy configuration.

Thank you for your trust and for use the 3CX forum.
