I was under the assumption that if a member of a ring group had their status set to Away, it would skip them and only ring the available members. However, this is not the case. It still rings the member even on Away status. Is that the correct behavior, and if so, what is the reasoning for that?

I haven't confirmed myself, but, it may be, that like other call forward options, it is ignored unless the call is direct to the extension number itself.

This is indeed the correct behavior, ring groups will ignore the away status and still ring the extension.

The reasoning behind this is to have an option to be available for Ring group calls but not available for direct calls to your extension. In this way you can use the forwarding rules for each status to handle your direct calls in a different way each time.

However if you wish to be unavailable for all calls you can dial *60 and *61 which are the universal dial codes for Do Not Disturb for the PBX.

Thank you for the explanation. DND sounds like a reasonable solution.
