SBH for remote extentions

Hi all, I am setting up a new system install now, was wondering if I need an SBH machine for my remote location.

Local location will have 5 extensions and remote location will only have 3 extensions.

Do I need a SBH regardless if I run the system on site or hosted on 3cx digital ocean or lightsail?

Should I just do STUN instead?

You can try stun, to see if it works but you must set it the 3cx support way.

1. Each phone requires a fixed ip address (can be dhcp reservation)
2. Each phone requires a different sip , block of rtp audio ports. (configured under phone provisioning)
3. You need to setup portforwarding on the router protecting the phones, to forward the correct ports to the correct phone.

For example

Phone 1 - Sip Port 5065 RTP Ports 14000 - 14012
Phone 2 - Sip Port 5066 RTP Ports 14020 - 14032

Etc

There are a number of factors that may make a difference. STUN may work, without issue, if setup correctly. But, you may still encounter an issue, with certain call scenarios, later.
If you feel comfortable configuring STUN (correctly), and all seems to work well, I would leave it as-is, for the time being, knowing you can always install an SBC if required.

So if I understand correctly, If I go online hosted instead of self, I would need to do STUN for my main location as well. Correct?

Correct, but depending on the amount of phones you maybe better off installing SBC server locally,

Note : 3CX Hosted Managed solution - stun configuration is not supported

In that case that I need a SBH locally, why not just go with raspberry pi self hosted solution, any major benefit of going hosted if I need a separate device regardless?

You might want to read through this, there are a number of other articles, dealing with the question, if you do some searches. A lot will depend on how involved you want to be, with the server hardware.

Short answer is, PBX hosted cloud then SBC is best way on each locations , no need to cut a hair in 4 .
Easy to manage, no pain to make all what's needed in STUN mode.
