Started using the 3cx service and I think its great. I have noticed however that there is an issue with sending SMS over various providers that have a limit of 160 characters for SMS.
The Phone/Web application will still allow you to send long SMS, but the SIP trunk causes it to fail upon sending without and reason given.

Is it possible to have a switch under the SMS SIP Trunk configuration to automatically break outgoing SMS into 156 multi-part messages? Or alternately a switch to limit the front end (App/Web) from accepting messages which are too long. I've seen quite a number of complaints from individuals who simply say SMS are not sending, but do not realize that the reason is because of the size of the SMS with certain providers. In my case the provider is VoIP.ms.

This happens only when the provider doesn't do the auto-splitting of long messages.

VoIP.ms is one of those not doing it. Not sure why.

Nothing you can do on the 3CX side for this.

I would think a switch that would at minimal limit the input to 160 characters if set enabled.
Worst case, a switch that would split them on client side. Other Asterisk VoIP trunk systems may potentially have the same issue.

Perhaps other systems, like Asterisk, have built-in mechanisms to do this

I'd like to echo that it would be great to have a feature in 3CX whereby you could specify a limit and the system would prevent you from trying to send if over the limit. This could be accomplished by having the text box not allow any further typing in the field by using a maxlength value based on a limit set in the system configuration.

If I'm being greedy, a character counter would be lovely too :)

As per ticket with voip ms today they say " As far as we understand, right now this is a system limitation, there are no current plans or information to allow more characters , however if this happens, we will announce it to the client database"
Do other providers work with character splitting? Is there something I could tell them that would make them look into this?

If you're still needing a solution, I created a script that does exactly this, my Dental office client needed it to avoid miscommunication with patients:
