Status to show on Phone

How do I get the Status BLF buttons to show what status the phone is actually in? All the status buttons show just a gray ball. We have Polycom VVX500 phones and Version 12. Since we are still running XP at this site, there is no way to use the desktop app. If they are in AWAY status should be different than the other status BLF's (IE Green instead of gray)
