STUN phone deployment?

Can I deploy a desk phone using STUN with 3CX StartUP? Or can I only use an SBC? If I can use STUN, do I need to open ports on the router at the location where the phone is deployed? This seems clunky compared to other VoIP providers that deliver plug-and-play desk phones.

No you cannot use STUN with StartUP but can use an SBC (just not yet, StartUP isn't fully complete yet.)

If you go STUN with a dedicated system, then you will indeed need to open ports and all.

The reason why they force us to do this is to prevent issues. Each firewall is different and some deal with STUN correctly, others don't. By having people use the SBC, they make sure the firewall is basically not involved in the traffic.

Gotcha. So, with StartUP, for now, I can only use desktop and mobile apps, right?

By using methods that sometimes work, and sometimes don't.

Seriously, I don't know but all I know is those other platforms usually have a lot of call issues (in my experience.)

Usually by providing a SBC in the cloud. Something has to handle NAT and what/where it is can vary by provider.

3CX is working towards making the phone "plug and play" as we type. They will do this by putting a "SBC" on the phone itself.
