Good morning,

The 3cx webiste lists GO as a supported provider https://www.3cx.com/partners/sip-trunks/malta/. However, when registering the trunk the only option is Twilio.
Is there something I'm missing or is GO not actually supported?

@Viipi - GO is a supported provider, but is not available in the Free edition of 3CX that you are currently using. With a dedicated instance it does appear in the dropdown menu.

Hi, just to mention, it might be worth taking a look at
(a) review some supported voip carriers / SIP providers you have access to in your 3cx instance
(b) cross check to see if any of them offer DID in your country? (ie, Malta)
(c) if yes - then you are fine, in theory.

there is no requirement that your SIP servers are in your geographic region. Clearly latency might be a bit lower if you can get a primary supplier who has servers in your location precisely. But strictly speaking it is not required. And many carriers/SIP trunk providers - have SIP Servers that are located ~all over the globe, so even if you use a provider in a ~not-so-close country, you can still pick a SIP server which is ~close enough that it will work ~perfectly fine.

case in point, I have a client I'm working with who has a 3cx self-hosted instance located in the UK. They recently wanted to light up on the 3cx, some extra DID located in Canada to support a local office near me / also in Canada. For this requirement, we are using a SIP trunk account with VoipMS - who are business based out of Montreal QC Canada I believe - the DID is for Halifax NS Canada - and then we've selected one of the VoipMS Servers 'close' to the 3cx server (London).

Client phone handset devices here in Halifax are linked to the 3cx Instance in UK. The SIP trunk provider is officially in Montreal. The POP for the SIP Trunk is in London. Despite feeling a bit helter-skelter, it all just works perfectly fine. No latency issues, no quality issues, it all just works.

so, I'm guessing with a bit of review and cross check, you can probably identify a supported SIP Trunk Provider / for your 3cx instance / who can give you a DID in your region / and ideally a SIP POP server not so far away / that it all works smoothly.

Good evening,

Thank you for specifying this. Though the information on the website seems to say differently. All it says that you need is a supported sip trunk which GO is listed as in the link provided. It also explicitly says that you will not have to worry about licensing, hosting or instance management.

If it's not the case, can this information be updated to avoid confusing others?

Hello Tim,

Thank you for your extensive post. Setting up comms isn't my area of expertise so appreciate any help. The whole reason for following supported list was in hopes for simplicity and ease of use since we use GO who is a supported trunk provider for other purposes as well.

I'm going to see about the options of self-hosting and on premises and see if that solves it.

Actually, on our supported providers page it is mentioned that these providers can only be used on an on prem or 3CX Hosted instance, which are dedicated instances.

There is a different category "PReferred" which work in all 3CX installation modes

The reason why some providers are not listed as compatible with a 3CX SMB Free instance is that they cannot be used in a shared, multi-tenant environment. They cannot accept multiple registrations from the same IP Address, so we have excluded them from the listing in the SMB Free.

You can always purchase a licence and use whichever provider you prefer.
Your SMB offering is useless for Malta. Who in their right mind would ever use Twilio with €0.22 per minute call rates to land lines. You should consider offering GO or Vanilla Telecom as an option.

I wouldn't mind paying for the service if there was a reasonable sized/priced option for companies such as ourselves with less than 10 employees, but currently, the smallest paid option is for 8/40.In fact I already do pay for such a service, with Alcatel Rainbow from GO, I just wanted to migrate to 3cx because I like the integration with Live Chat and WhatsApp and I think 3cx offers overall better usability.

Twilio, the only option available in SMB do not even offer local numbers for Malta which makes the service unusable.

I'm not sure why you have a problem with my answer. SMB is the free version of 3CX and simply doesn't offer everything you might want. GO, for example, is available as a provider for the paid version. The reason for this has already been explained to you. If that doesn't suit you, there are plenty of alternatives on the market.
