No help needed here, I just thought I would be a good netizen and post an update to the thread below in case anyone else comes across the same problem.
Our dashboard showed we had unsupported phones but the list of phones showed all were up-to-date and we don't use custom templates.
The advice was to raise a ticket but that didn't prove to be necessray in the end.
The ultimate cause was a hotdesking phone in an unused office that had dropped off the network some time ago and wasn't shown in the list of phones any more. Weeks on I just so happened to need a spare room to work in, found this phone complaining of 'no network' and rebooted it. It appeared back in the list of phones in red and a quick firmware update means I now have all green ticks for the first time in months.
