V18 Alpha 4: App Auto Selects Best Codec

Our friendly customers are not really happy about the new design.

Possible improvements :)

+ Open the menu View attachment 22304 like in the old web client. Otherwise all customers must to learn the symbols ?!
+ View attachment 22305Menu on the left side. You have to move across the screen from the symbols.
+ On average, our customers have 5-10 extensions, so it looks very empty.

Completely agreed. This is too stripped-down to be good.

While I see the benefit in using the webclient in a smaller window next to your mail or calendar, people who prefer to use the client on a complete screen will prefer the old design. Perhaps an option to choose the old skin?

The new webclient will run in a browser or as a native windows app (same way whatsapp or teams does it) and the idea is not that you use it as a tab in a browser but rather on the side of your desktop as shown above.

In this way, the client is much more accesible and you can easily keep it alongside your main work space being office, crm or whatever. This is the idea of the new "web client" design.
Hello 3CX Team,

Is it possible to try the weblicent as a new native Windows App using v18 Alpha 4 ? if yes, please, could you explain how ?

To use in production for 2000 users, is it better to use the webclient as a new native Windows App or to install the traditionnal windows application ?

I thank you in advance for your advises.

Regards,

@Manuskysurfeur The new beta coming out soon will have the new desktop app. Both are very performant and will handle 2000 users easily. I think it will be easier to roll out the new "windows" desktop app to be honest and you can try first with that....

Hello Nick,

I thank you for your answer and your availability on the forum.

I hope we could try the Beta version soon :-)

Another question regarding the new "windows" desktop app, will it be possible to use G711 codec by default on the outbound calls in order to avoid transcoding and poor audio quality ?

Using the webclient (OPUS by default on Chrome), the outbound calls from webclient still results in degraded audio quality on v18 Alpha 4...

Best Regards,

@Nick W - Well you already had Opus in v16 :) But anyway if you have enough bandwidth and processing you can now set the default to whatever you want, there is a new page codecs for all the apps (i.e. one setting for all). You can set the default for wifi and for mobile data to whatever you want...

Keep in mind the webclient uses WebRTC which only supports Opus or G711 (PCMU). So if you dont choose either you are going to see a lot of transcoding - unless you dont use the web or new windows client. Personally I would leave it on G711 but its a free world :)

@Nick Galea - Are you guys still on track for ticket system release in v18 initial release, or is that pushing towards a later release?

Just set up a test environment for myself to try the v18 Alpha 4 build.
Mainly to see what's going on with the new web client.

While I get the idea of having it in a smaller window and it actually works really well for that, I still have to agree with a lot of things that have been criticized here already.
In a full screen browser window, it just looks very empty and relies too heavily on the icons. Some things are hidden away that were clearly visible at a glance in v16, like the 'call using...' feature that let's you control your desktop app. (This is something very useful when using the web client within an rdp session)

A very good solution in my opinion would be to make the design more responsive - for example in a small/narrow window only the icons are shown and if you resize the window by a certain amount it would still show text next to the icons, more like it was in the v16 web client. (The same concept could be applied to some of the ui elements like the 'call using' feature mentioned above or the call and message buttons that used to be next to the individual contacts.)
That way we could have the best of both worlds and it would be more intuitive for users as well since resizing the window would automatically show the text and clear up any confusion about the icons.

With all that said, I'm really looking forward to testing out the other new features in the next days as far as possible and I'm always excited for the new ideas you come up with. Been using 3CX in production for about a year now and it's been great so far.

Is a responsive design not the actual best thing for all users here? Not forcing everyone to a smaller design with less usability. Responsive caters to everyone not just the people who setup their screen like you have many people have multiple displays or do more dedicated work on voicemails/transcriptions depending on their roles.

The Admin console has a hamburger menu icon in the top left which already has the code to better display the left menu and pull it out depending on user preference.
