I received a notification on 2 failed updates over last weekend. After these failures I have 2 clients that the system is essentially bricked. All services fail to start.

Failure logs show a list of files in the Bin folder where access is denied.
"2024/12/15 23:32:41.323|0001|Warn| [Updater2.UpdateManager] Access to the path 'C:\Program Files\3CX Phone System\Bin\Prometheus.AspNetCore.dll.tmp' is denied."

Then... After an uninstall, reboot, and reinstall. The installation fails on connecting to database. "An installation process is already running from another connection..."

Ended up getting one of them locked out of FQDN because of maxed attempts.

Anyone know of a resolution to the issue with multiple installation showing up?

Hi @RC IT

It seems that some other application had the file locked at the time of the update.
If you have an antivirus or other security software installed and running on the server, you should exclude the 3CX directories as mentioned in our windows installation guide here: https://www.3cx.com/docs/manual/phone-system-installation-windows/#:~:text=Any installed Antivirus Software should NOT scan:
Thanks for the reply. No security software interference with the 3cx directories.

Both of these servers have been running since V17 (Guessing). So they've been running for a while without interference before. The bigger issue is the reinstallation. What is making this show a 2nd installation already running from somewhere else where I can't reinstall 3cx on these servers? I had the 3cx backups so a restore from a backup would have made this "Not worth mentioning" here. Uninstall, Reinstall from backup before the update, Done. Not the case here.

I had BMR backups on both of these machines so I had to do a full bare metal recovery on both of them back to before the weekend to get my system back up and running. It unfortunately took +14 hrs to do a full restore of the server image from a cloud backup.

After the restore. Now backups fail. Tried restarting services and everything shutdown again. None of the services will start except nginx and media. Everything else fails.

Tried another uninstall and reinstall from backup. Once again. Can't reinstall.

Check the taskmanager for the other process... Remember that the server must be dedicated to 3cx and no other software.

Can you not do a fresh OS install and restore the PBX from backups? Anything such as pending windows updates that might be blocking the installer?

The only other software on this server is Unifi Controller on one of the server. Maybe it could be interacting but it hasn't in years. The other server is running Paxton Access software.

Not that I can see. All updates are done. I have not tried a fresh install of the OS but that is what we are down to. Since I can't seem to find a resolution for the issue, we'll be giving our 3cx a new platform to run on.

That isnt an good idea, that could bring you some problems like this.

Why not switch to linux?

I may have to. Still doesn't explain the issue I'm having. Neither of those 2 servers are running the same software on them, so it can't be "the other software's fault". I have other servers that ARE running the Unifi software that didn't fail the update and are working just fine.

If there isn't a resolution for this issue then I have to do a "Clean Slate" approach, so be it.

I was hoping for a resolution but if there isn't one then that's what I'll do. I'd hope that when my car is misfiring that not all mechanics would just tell me to buy a new car. Not that I can't, just be nice to fix the issue.

Thanks for the responses. I'm already preparing the client with their options.

This isnt an supported scenario.... But anyway, did you check the taskmanager for any running installations from 3cx?
