After a recent upgrade we noticed that 3CX did away with being able to use Google public relay and now have to use a dedicated email account. We have been trying to get this to work with no success so far.

I have been through the article hear (https://www.3cx.com/blog/docs/gmail-mail-server/) and set everything correctly but still does not work - all I get is message saying "The operation has cancelled". I noticed in the new version that there is an option for mail server 'Gmail' - have tried using this option which just requires email account and password but still does not work either.
Based on packet captures I have taken I can see the SMTP initial handshake and then the SSL handshake between our 3CX server and Gmail's SMTP server but after that no email is actually sent and all I see are TCP Re-transmission packets with no response from the SMTP server. Interestingly enough I did notice that after about 10 min and multiple re-transmission packets being sent that the Gmail SMTP server does respond back with an SMTP packet stating 'Timeout - closing connection'.
At this point I don't know why this does not work with Gmail SMTP server - has anyone gotten this working?
Have also done the log into the email account on the 3CX server and enabled less secure apps in the email account.
