I am interested in becoming a re-seller. I understand the basics of VOIP technology, but I have little experience with other systems, other than MiTel which we use at my office dayjob.

I am curious, in a nutshell: what are the advantages/disadvantages of 3CX vs other PBX systems?

Two big advantages...you don't require provider specific/supplied hardware, you can even host remotely so no server is located on premises.

It uses a "SIP standard", .It does not require proprietary sets/devices

A few extra additional points:

* Very easy to use GUI based interface.
* Runs on both Linux and Windows based servers.
* Very cost effective against competitive solutions (Avaya, Mitel, Unify etc).
* Free online training for the system (and dependent on where you are based classroom based training for free also).

As far as pricing goes, is it pretty much standard for other PBX systems for pricing to be based per-user? As I understand it, we pay about $25/extension here for Mitel. Is that pretty close to the pricing for most other systems?

Also, how do most resellers monetize their 3CX installs? Do they charge a one-time setup, then a revolving monthly fee for support?

I would not agree with the pricing comment, despite the per user part. Especially if you consider that with some of the PBX brands that have been mentioned if you want additional bolt-on features (for example voicemail, recording etc) you have to pay for each.

3CX bundles mostly all features in as standard - see the version comparison list:
