so right now we have, for many users, a Desk Phone in the office, a Cell Phone on the road and now a softphone on the home computer. By law, does 911 need configuration when these people are at home? What is the config to separate the desk phone from the soft phone at home?

Most people at home will use their home phone or cellphone to call 911. I have seen no one having the reflex to call 911 with their softphone/webclient or even deskphones.

Common sense does not apply to laws, usually. Ha ha

Seriously, though. Of course they would use their desk phone!

I am aware. But you can simply block 911 from the system and people will have to call using something else.

To answer your question: 1 DID per home, dedicated with their 911 address registration. The U5 can permit you to do this easily but requires lots of DIDs.

I don't. None of my customers do unless they are in the office. I always tell them that outside the office, use your own phone.

so the law says each home bound user must have a DID if 911 is active on the extension??? Can someone else please confirm?

I would have to differentiate the desk phone in the office (anyone can grab it in an emergency) from the soft phone at the employees house????

Please God, no!

The DID is assigned to the extension/group. You can use one for many users if they live at the same place. If they have a deskphone at the office and a softphone, both will send the same DID so the same 911 registration.

But yes, you need a DID to use as Caller ID when dialing 911 and your provider will do the rest (matching the 911 address).

This is a company of 60 employees and there is only one DID.

Based on your answer, I am screwed legally

You would simply need 60 DIDs (no need to route them), one for each employee working from home, linked to their own address.

Yes, this is a mess to configure but like I said, tell them to not use their work phone for 911 and the problem is fixed. You can block the number in the Outbound Rules to prevent anyone from calling.

While PBX features to handle 911, under normal circumstances, may work, legally, these are not normal circumstances,(and hopefully), won't go on too long. Users are taking their normally office desk bound phone, home. This is going to require some work, to meet the letter of the law, or the law may be relaxed (you would have to check with authorities), as not all systems can accommodate the new 911 locations.

If a user, out of the office, placed a 911 call, using their 3CX App...how would that work, legally? Obviously, there has to be some common sense involved as well, as not every possible situation, can be anticipated or accommodated.

It's one thing to require that you can dial 911, from a device using no prefix, another to require the exact location of that device.
