I am trying to gain a general understanding of how this works for a Wordpress chat implementation. All I have ever used on my 3CX system is physical phones and the softphone app for iOS a handful of times.

So, what exactly does the Wordpress component interface with? Does it somehow connect to my chat interface via the 3CX web client?

What happens if l am not able to chat with the customer? Is the browser-based client the only way to chat with customers or is there another client I need?

The Wordpress (or other) site will connect to your extension or a queue. In the Chat mode the remote user will be in chat mode in your 3CX Phone app. If you enable the voice option then user will have an option to initiate voice communication to your phone or softphone. If you are not available the user will just not receive a reply. If they are directed to your queue and no agents are logged in the remote user will be advised of such.

You say ". In the Chat mode the remote user will be in chat mode in your 3CX Phone app " Does that mean it only works with the phone apps? Or does it work with the web browser client, too?

I consider the web app to be a phone app so yes it works WHEREVER you have the 3CX chat.
