Assigning DID to Voicemail Extension

Our self-hosted 3CX install was working fine for a few years, until our trunk provider, Wiretap asked us to migrate our existing trunks to a new version. I tried updating the trunk hostname per Wiretap's instructions, but in the 3CX portal there was no place to update the hostname, so Wiretap support suggested that I create a new trunk. OK, I did that, and had some issues with calls not going through but I resolved those issues. (The problem was, I think, that the DID numbers were prefixed with +1 and they should not have been).
Anyway, now, I'm missing an option in the trunk config that I had before, where I was able to assign a DID for the Voicemail Extension, by default ext. 999. That option is simply just not there any more in the 3CX portal. The client used that direct VM DID to call into the voicemail system and retrieve voicemails for shared extensions. (Yes, I know there is the email option, but it is not 100% reliable, so the client likes to be able to check the voicemail directly). Anyone have any idea why this option disappeared? Is there another way to do it now? What is my alternative?
I tried to manually assign a DID to the extension 999, but it doesn't just show up in the Call Handling page, or under Users. So now, the users are trying to call the Voicemail number and they are just getting the main DR with the voice menu.

Thanks in advance for any help.

We're running version 20.0.7.1080, self-hosted in MS Azure on a Linux VM. Please let me know if any other details would be helpful.

Here is a screenshot from our old trunk config. The highlighted DID was the one we used for direct access to ext 999:

Are you able to work around this by creating an extension that forwards all inbound calls to the Special Menu (typically 999), and assigning the DID to that?

Hi Kevin,

Thanks for the suggestion. Yes, creating a new extension and then forwarding all calls to the Special Menu 999 extension worked. However, I'm still curious why we needed a workaround - why did the original option disappear? The world may never know.
