Hi all,

I'm in need of reformatting the outbound caller-id in "FROM:" sip header, since a newly configured (after number portability) voip provider checks and accepts only national formatted DID numbers but all my extensions have the "Outbound CallerID" field in international format.

From this article: https://www.3cx.com/docs/cid-reformatting/

<<Outbound Caller ID reformatting requires the use of the “OriginatorCallerID” to be active in the SIP Trunk “Outbound Parameters” settings>>,

I used the OriginatorCallerID variable to be able to use substitutions patterns and to strip the international prefix in the outbound caller id.

The downside is that by using that variable for incoming calls diverted to an external mobile, the inbound caller id is preserved and passed as outbound caller id. This is what OriginatorCallerID is intended for as I understand from documentation. The problem is that the involved voip provider doesn't allow caller-id forwarding since it only accepts oubound calls with their DID numbers in the FROM fields. For this reason inbound calls diverted to external numbers are blocked and fail.

Can anybody suggest how can I perform the caller id reformatting without preserving the originator caller id wich cause the call forwarding issue?

Thanks in advance and best regards

Rocco

Hi Rocco,

As you mentioned the variable OriginatorCallerID is needed for reformatting to work so if that does not work for you then your other option is to change the number format in the extensions "Outbound CallerID" field so no reformatting is needed.

The reformatting was intended to be used for forwarded calls to normalize the number format in case the provider requires it.

Hi Yiannis,
thank you for your kind and prompt reply. I'm of course aware of the possibility to correct the number in the extension's "outbound CallerID" field, but that is not viable or it's at least our last resort. There would be several hundreds of extensions to modify. The idea of exporting and importing back extensions is considered a bit risky too. So,what I'm looking for is the possibility to manipulate on the fly the caller id but by always using the DID filled in the extension "outbound callerID" field as source and by never forwarding the original external caller id in case of forwarding.

Kind regards

Rocco

Other than selecting OriginatorCallerID , have tried the other dropdown options available, to see if the outcome changes to something that works?

Other than that, the only thing I might suggest is creating a new outboud rule, using a different prefix, for use when forwading to an outside number. Put the companies main caller ID in that rule so that it will show in place of the original callers.

I believe that your best option is to proceed with your last resort and modify the caller ID at the extension level. I don't see any other way since the originator caller ID option does not work for you.
Also if you need to troubleshoot something in the future it will be far less complicated this way. It requires a bit of manual labor since there are a lot of extensions but it should be fairly straightforward to do so.

Thank you, of course that would be the cleaner option.

This is interesting. I will take this possibility into account. I would then try to put as mobile number to divert calls to, the external number with a fake prefix and then create an outbound rule to catch it wich uses a fixed outbound caller id. The downside is that every user will receive calls from the main company number and not from his own extension...
