Hi,

When we create a conference and join, the audio quality is quiet and muffled. My guess is that there is conversion being done to a bad codec.

Direct calls between extensions, extensions to outside, and internal conferences are fine.

I am able to get close in the poor audio quality direct between extensions if I set one to g722 only and another to g711.

Do conferences try to use g722 by default?

Are you forcing some sets to use g722, by removing the other Codecs from the list of those that are available? Have you checked the Activity Log, for one of the calls, to see if transcoding is happening?

In my test, yes. I was forcing one end to use g722 and the other to not have it as an option.

My system is currently very busy and the activity log search isn't returning anything. Any idea which file the activity log is stored in?

May be best to do the test "after hours" when it is quiet and the log is easier to read. In most cases, it is best to use a common Codec across all devices (sets and trunks), Perhaps use the Codec used by your provider as first choice, put that at the top of the list, but don't remove the ability to use others. Every set-up is going to be different and there are legitimate reasons to use low-bit-rate Codecs, or HD versions. However, If it causes problems, you sometimes have to take a second look at your choices.

Leejor - Yes, what you are suggesting is exactly how I am used to running a phone system. One issue appeared that our carrier was sending g729 when I was expecting g711. I've made changes for that and made sure every desk phone was on the latest firmware... so far no more complaints.
