connect to 3CX server - VPN or public IP?

I have my 3cx server in a datacenter. That datacenter is connected back to the main office with a site 2 site VPN.

I wanted to know if its better to have the phones connect to pbx using the local IP, or using public IP?
Although more secure...I feel that using the VPN would be slower and cause some latency and/or call quality issues. I haven't had any issues trying either way as of yet...but I wanted some thoughts on the recommended way to handle.

The phones support 'SIP Server 1' and 'SIP Server 2'. Could I add public IP in 'SIP Server 2' as a backup if VPN goes down? (using yealink T46S phones)

The configuration depends on your needs. Generally speaking provisioning devices as local gives you more options as to the devices you can use as legacy phones and gateways can only provisioned as local.

Not with the default provisioning method.
