I am having an issue with delay on external calls. Here is my environment:

-3CX server hosted in Azure
-Using VOIP.MS SIP
-Have 2 remote phones 1 Yealink T21EP, 1 Yealink T48S (just upgraded)

I have had multiple issues mostly at my site. I used to get one way audio quite often after 5-7 minutes in a call, both internal and external. I setup an SBC on my site and that seemed to fix that issue.

I just purchased the 48S before the holidays and calls sound better, but now I know it was not just the old phone that was the issue. When calling external, we are constantly tripping over each other "you go", "oops sorry go ahead" etc because there is a slight 1-2 second delay. I tried pinging to VOIP.MS (the server I am using) and am getting <100 MS, closer to 50 MS consistently.

I am now running a Ping to my IP in Azure and am getting 48ms, 550ms, 184 ms, 327 ms etc.

I have not configured any Firewall rules on the Azure side. I have a Sonicwall device on the local side with the SBC and have ALG turned off. The Firewall test in 3CX shows all test passed.

Where should I start troubleshooting?

Thanks for any input.

What Codecs are you using? Are they the same, right from the set to your provider?

On the SIP trunk in 3CX i have these in this order: G722, G711 U Law, G729, GSM-FR

On the Handset options in 3CX I have : PCMU, PCMA, G722, G729

On the VOIP.MS I have these 2 enabled: G711U and G729a (it does not say if they are tried in order, but it does say Recommended Ulaw or G729a)

SO the only ones that I have in all 3 places are G722 and G729, although on VOIP.MS it says G722 is BETA.

Should I also be concerned with the settings inside the Yealink phone web config?

Delay is not a codec issue. This is the issue:

I am now running a Ping to my IP in Azure and am getting 48ms, 550ms, 184 ms, 327 ms etc.

Your internet connection is terrible. Anything over ~125ms is going to have noticeable delay. You'll need to figure out why you are getting those pings.

My internet connection seems fine. I am pinging Google and getting 13ms, 11ms. max 18ms

I would assume that Azure has a pretty decent connection as well. What could be causing those ping times? I guess I could call my ISP and see if they have a bad route to the specific Azure data center.

This!

Just because your internet connection seems ok, does not mean it is, keep an eye on the traffic monitor also in the sonicwall, perfect it isnt, but useful it is to a point, if you see sudden BW spikes correlating to the high pings, something on your network is pulling a lot of BW intermittently, see it all the time with users playing youtube, streaming stuff, downloading, etc....
